Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • New addition to the fleet....

Last week we picked up a 1997 MK3 Golf GL as a run around car for us to replace our previous shopping car (Festiva )
Will post pics soon but basically its red, 5 speed, no dents etc, interior is in really good nick. Done 125,000k's
Bought it from the second owner who's relative bought it new for his business.
No doubt i will have some questions about where to get parts etc so stay tuned...
So far i have fixed the main key (the one with the push button light in it) so now the light works.
    Other issues it has....
Squeaky belt when at low revs
Gear stick is real sloppy - new linkages or bushes needed?
rear passenger door lock pull is different to the other 3 - need to source the correct one.
Electric mirrors only work in one direction - electric mirror control switch worn contacts?
    Cruise control not working.
Its gonna go in for a look over in a few weeks and get the gear stick, electric mirror switch and cruise control looked at.

          thanks for the welcome...
yes been a VW enthusiast for quite a few years now. Been a club member on and off over the years also.
it was on carsales in western suburbs of melbourne... was actually looking at a cheaper one that had some panel damage.. but the guy had to delay the sale as he was staying in melbourne for another month or so...
ended up looking at this one and negotiated a good price.
Oh and another thing to fix is the gear lever... It is torn so when you push it into 1st, 3rd or 5th it feels like half the ball is gonna come off in your hand... its funny how that didn't get a mention on the rwc yet the windscreen (which i thought was really good) and the wipers had to be changed. lol

we had it checked over last week to fix a few issues.
Gearknob has been replaced. Gearknob bushing had broken so that made finding gears interesting. Has improved but getting into first is sometimes impossible... so not sure what sort of problem it has with the gearbox and whether its worth investigating at the moment.
It had developed a squeal that sounded like a belt rubbing or similar... found out it was the cam belt rubbing on a cover. had the belt replaced and a few other belts as well.
Electric mirrors need a new control switch which i will replace next time it gets a service...
Cruise control was looked at as it was not working.... well it doesn't have cruise control!!
someone has replaced the stalk at some point and put in the one with the cruise control on it... lol So i think I'll change that to the correct one.
Also hunting for some floor mats. And also need to find out the correct door lock knobs as one door has a different one to the rest.
Oh and also our daughter opened her window in the back even tho the lock on the dash was on... lol. so need to get that sorted.

Great buy, good looking and clean, congrats. KI11Z hit the nail on the head; keep the car out out of the sun as much as possible, feed the paint with polish/carnuba and "Forever Black" on the trim bits to keep it looking good.
