  • Got a VW Project, B4 Passat VR6!

Here she is boys, my first VW.. Had some problems which are mostly fixed now so I'm pretty proud got her for a song with plenty of rego. Drives so well and has plenty of power for an auto.

I know I probably should have posted in the Passat section but as it's really a mk3 and all the Passat threads are for new cars. Also I think I'll get the most input from knowledgeable people regarding the VR6 engine here.

Plans so far are to strip the engine and replace all the gaskets, as I think it hasn't been well maintained in its life, check and clean everything humanly possible. Full tune with new plugs, leads, filters, oils etc.. Interested in ideas for further mods. My main focus being the engine. Although I am considering some coilovers and a little bodywork, toying with the idea of a turbo but not sure how the autobox would handle that..

    Cheers!

I'd love to convert it to manual.. But I'm kinda enjoying driving an auto for the first time in my life. It works surprising well, down-shifts so fast once I even half depress the accelerator. Looking forward to getting all my parts and pulling everything apart, should run so much better..

Average fuel consumption is sitting on 12l/km does this sound high to you guys?

Are the golf gearboxes compatible with the passats?

Found some JOM coilovers for cheap, can't really find much info about them though. Anyone have any experience?

That's about average for them. guessing these weigh a bit more than the golf though?

The lowest mine has ever read was 7.2l/100km

Absolutely spewing. The car got t-boned (My first ever car accident) and it's a write off. I was well insured so it's all good and no one got hurts.

I was hit at 90kms~ straight into the passenger door.

I'd just got it running how i wanted and had spent a fair amount of time on the engine, kinda glad I hadn't committed too much time into fixing the heater core now.. I did get the option to buy back the car and after the amount of time i spent and money getting the engine running and fixed up I am extremely tempted, would love to chuck the engine into a 2door golf.. SO SO TEMPTED!!

From the pics for a 90km/h hit i think the car stood up very well!

Thanks guys, the insurance bloke said it's an extremely safe car one of the safest on the market for its era.. Which obviously for the damage and how was both walked away I'd totally agree with. We even had a chat about other VWs on the market, he was obviously a fan!!

I'm debating whether to keep it and buy back for a project and sell some parts off (can't see much demand tbh..) or just letting the insurance mob keep it. Argghh..

Sad to see. Cars can be replaced but people cant. Move on to bigger and better things!

What a bugger. I have a similar car the same colour but mine is no where near as nice as yours was. All the clear has gone off on the paint on mine. I quite enjoy driving it as it is the only auto that we own. Very cruisey but still so quick to 160 when it kicks down. Mines not worth spending any money on. I just keep driving (as a back up car) and it keeps plugging along. Unfortunately mine will be probably be going to the grave yard if anything breaks on it. So that would be 2 less on the road.

I never even saw this thread pop back up.

I'm glad to hear you walked away. For a hit at 90km/h there is barely a scratch on the car.
