  • $4000 for kinetic turbo- there must be a cheaper way, does any one have this kit

hey everyone! this is a great site and i hope i can get some good feedback

i have owned my 97 vr6 for almost 2 years and is a great little car.

I have been researching decent mods for ages now and the key point seem to be it cost heaps to upgrade any more than K&N and a chip and all the head work is to some degree restricted by the design of the head, forced induction is the way to get a serious power increase, which makes perfect sense since its a great little engine as is(except maybe the inherent problem with the back 3 cylinders drawing air through the head heating it somewhat)

I However have access to some coin now and really want to boost it but just cant really justify the shipping cost for the kinetic kit(which is $ 1000). I have looked on the net at many sites however bahn brenner seems the best choice because i can get a few other parts from them(opinion of them?) does everyone get there parts all from US?
I seen theres a place in brisbane that does vr6 turbos but they want $8000 WTF

these prices are pretty crazy!! I am now considering just putting together a set up with locally sourced parts however i think that after i get manifold, garret turbo, intercooler, injectors, ECU (the list goes on and on) its going to be a pain to set up and will need parts fabricated/modified my mechanics (more money) and then more time to tune (risk off leaning out, ECU, MAF ect) so basically im after some advice on the best way to turbo my vr6 because im going to do it anyway, i must admit im drawn to kinetics because every thing fits and i can do it myself i guess ill just have to bite the bullet and fork out $5000

There is no cheap way to turbo a vr6 haha. 4 grand seems pretty good actually. I assume that doesnt come with an ecu and tuning though..

I think it would be around the 8-10K mark by the time you get it running properly, then Clutch and Brakes, LSD. You will most likley need a stand alone which could cost you up to 5K
I dont know if the LHD kits fit a RHD car either

        thanks guys for your replys
yeah pretty much my thoughts, I knew i would be a lot had know idea it would be 10 grand plus seems you cant do anything on vr6 without sourcing parts overseas(shipping $$$).
Good point about the LHD kits i didnt even think about that i guess the power steering ect would all be in the way, the kinetic kit says its got ECU chip and a MAF housing so i had assumed it was compatible with with stock ecu and maf sensor (however assumption is the mother of f$#K ups) does anyone have more info, ill look it op after this post
my vr has stage 2 clutch $850 and the vented disk already so i thought turbo was the next stage (its got the best spot, heaps if room engine bay looks built for it)

i would love to hear from anyone in aus that has this kit and pick there brain, but if it doesnt work in RHD theres probly no one

Pick the brains of mk3pete and this other guy from adelaide who has done a vr6 turbo conversion. I cant remember his name sorry. Starts with mk1-something...

Hey man, yeh it's 8-10k to get it up an running yourself, couple $k more for a mechanic, though with a turbo kit it might be a tiny bit cheaper. You just gotta be careful not to make any mistakes when putting everything in, otherwise you'll be forking out a few more thousands to fix what u might have stuffed. The stock ecu can run a turbo, i think its was 8psi max. The chip just makes it work better.
A turbo kit is surposed to be a plug an play thing, it be best if u just called them to make sure that everything is provided. If so, as long as there is no issues with LHD, RHD conversion, it should work

Good luck, i hope u pull through with it, cause we need more turbo vr's in aus.

theres another guy as well, who has turboed a 24v bora in the mk4 section. He used a custom tuned C2 computer, all up excluding his mistakes, hes total was somewhere around 10k.
              Pick hes brains

Speak to Bug_racer on here. I think he is the only one who is using a "kit". Everyone else is doing custom pipework and tuning AFAIK.

unfortunately there is no cheap way to turbo a vr6 and have it work long term. Mine has been running strong for almost 4 years as a daily driver with only drag racing damage and minor cooling system issues.

Have you run yours down the 1/4 yet?

A big thing to note is what condition is your engine in. With VR6s nudging the 20 year old mark most will have higher km engines.

No, no 1/4 runs yet. There are no 1/4 tracks in Adelaide. My best run down the 1/8 at portland was 8.77 and an 8.79. The 8.79 was when i striped 3rd gear and had to finish in 4th.

Does anyone know if heathcote is open again?
