  • Automatic to Manual VR6. Possible ?

Been looking and may have found something i want. .

Any chance a Automatic transmission VR6 can be converted to manual ? I.E Donor manual gearbox or something? or you can't ? Just wondering.

Sure it can be done, whether or not it is within budget is to your discretion. Have a google mate it's been done a thousand times. I'll let the more in the know step in and fill you in but you'll need the box, pedals, clutch, ECU?...
Will change the cars fun-factor dramatically I'd say, since on paper manual knocks 2 seconds off auto's 0-100 time

Well youd have an extra pedal to clean around. Thats about the only downside I can think of. Would probably be cheaper just to get one thats already manual.

Mind you, there's something to converting one, as the auto might have kept the engine in decent nick i.e. not reving its face off for the last 15 years. But yeah, probably cheaper to sell up and buy a manual.... but if you're set on that car, ask around and see who has the time, skill, and realistic pricing to do it.

Going off Courtneys time just in this Vid (she did run faster over the weekend) Portland VW only Drag Racing 2010 - YouTube
Then punch the numbers into this : Wallace Racing -Calculate how fast your car goes 0 - 60 mph
gives it a figure of around 6 seconds . You seriously think that if it was a manual it would run a 4 ? That would make it faster than : Ferrari 550 Maranello = 4.2 seconds !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to go faster modify the engine , strengthen the gearbox or sell it and buy a manual .

Oh , I'll also put out a challenge for ANY MANUAL NATURALLY ASPIRATED VR6 to race on the 1/4 mile Courtneys VR6 when its finished .

I think it would have been pretty fair to have assumed I was referring to unmodified cars, I was pretty open about saying 'on paper' too. No disrespect, but you jumped at that one a bit quick, at this point the performance of a modified car isn't hugely relevant.

I think he's talking stock vs stock? Not stock manual versus the forced injection number you have built. right?

Although I know 2 seconds is at the greater end of differences I've read, some have it less than a second difference, nonetheless traffic lights, two stockies next to each other, my money is on the manual. For me personally manuals win hands down for fun factor too, I dare say I'd rather daily my NA manual than even a boosted auto... each to their own though.

If perfomance isnt relevant then why go from auto to manual ?

Yeah autos are slower than a manual with a good driver , but it doesnt mean it justifies not using the auto as a basis for modification . The money spent converting an auto to manual could be spent on the auto which will end up going faster .

I'm not one to argue on forums, please reread my comments if you need clarification, or reconsider them in the context of the OP's question/position. Thanks. But I agree the auto isn't to be binned at first sight (mine was because it was slipping), it all depends on what your expectations of the car are. Fun runabout, my preference is manual, getting into more serious drag racing, auto has its merits.

To the top , you wont need a pedal box as the auto is the same as the manual, you change he pin to a longer manual one and fit the manual pedal. Done a few , very doable but not a simple job, best to have a donor car as you may have to scrounge around for all the bits, if you need a comprehensive list if you take it to the next level im sure i could compile one for ya. As for the reason to convert i prefer the VR with a manual as the 096 and 01m trannies are not the most reliable thing, well as im writing this the manuals have their days too. Ah well.
Seb you bringin the VR up to QLD when done?? ( Warwick)

Thats the thing , you replace a tired / broken auto with a just as tired manual gearbox . And you pay a heap of money . You may as well just get the auto rebuilt .

I'll be up at Warwick again , not sure which car/s will go up . When will you bring a car down ?
