Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Check Engine Light Gone ?

    Hi All

I am new here , check out my intro here. I sure hope you guys are nicer then the "new Jetta" section

Anyway I am going to start with a real dumb question and yes I did try searching and googling etc.

My car has a rough idle , I am pretty sure its plugs / leads / coil but just to be sure I want to check the fault codes but on my 95 Mrk3 VR6 (pretty sure its ODB I) where is the check engine light ?
I have a sneaking suspicion its been removed.

Here is my dash, should it be between the battery and head light ?

    Any help appreciated.

80% sure OBD1 VR6's dont even have a check engine light from factory! My old one definitely didnt.

aha , thanks for that , so the only way to get error codes is using the appropriate reader ? ........ right ?

        Welcome to the forums man
yes thats right, in between the battery and hand brake light ! (assuming that strip where all the warning lights are, is the same as a GL).
Check egine lights only come on when something bad has happened/about to happen that has the potential to screw the motor up (pretty sure of this), so having a rough idle wont bring that light on.
im pretty sure you carnt get to the back of that warning light strip, you can only change the bulbs i think.
oh an thats a 98model dash.
go through the basic catergories (air, fuel, electrical) to figure the problem out.
and i think tocheck for error codes the only way is using some vagcom cable thingy.
