Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ECU remap worth it?

    Hi all, i'm wanting to get more power out of my GL and an ECU Remap came to mind, im new to cars so i thought i would ask here to see if it would be worth the money or not? If anyone can recommend a garage that will do it near melbourne that would be great too.

    Thanks

    You won't make much extra power from a remap on your GL. You could buy a chip from ebay that is for your ECU part number that would make a handful of KW at best. Drive-ability would improve a bit.
    Your money would be best spent elsewhere, a cam shaft maybe. It would be good to make sure it's running as well as it can in standard form first. A good service, with plugs etc.

      A 260 cam, mk4 extractors or ebay unit, and a good intake are probably the best things you can do to get power out of a 2l reasonably cheaply, chips for n/a cars are usually the last thing you do once you sort the hardware first

        Hi all, have a query for Gavin and whiteVR6 respectively;
        can the GL with a 2E engine be tuned via the diagnostic port near the ashtray?
        would you have a chip for the 2E?
        I already have a bigger cam and the exhaust has been freed up. Not looking for a big increase, just optimize what I have.
        Thanks

          Nah, it's a physical chip change but one you can do yourself. There's a heap of folk on ebay doing the kind of thing you need. Get your ECU part number and search on that.

          I had an ebay chip in my Ibiza GTI which mad a noticeable difference to the way it ran. Much revvier at the top end and a good bump in the mid range too.
