  • Colour matching black trim/bumpers

    Hey,

I'm wondering if anyone has a link to a good DIY of colour matching the textured black trim/bumpers so that it's smooth and the same colour as the car (red in my case) and also if someone has tips and stuff from experience of doing one themself. I assume that it's going to take a very long time sanding... should be fun!

That could look pretty cool. I'm interested to see the results.

Obviously the easiest and safest way (in terms of reducing over spray) would be to remove the bumpers and trims..

Alternatively just get out some paper towel/or old blankets/towels, mask of the edges and tape the towels over the rest of the car..

less than 2 weeks until I finish year 12 exams first projects are going to be wheel paint (inspired by mighty car mods) and colour matching bumpers, since I'm too poor for anything else yet. The MKIII Appreciation Thread has lots of examples of what I'm talking about

do it right, much better result for you

        remove the bumpers and trim

        sand smooth

use a proper plastic primer for bumpers - autobarn ect have one in a can

you can then spray over this, or it may need a high build primer first to smooth out any nicks and dings...

after the undercoats etc, a quick rub with 1500 wetrub (done wet) will take away the little imperfections and embedded dust etc..

It's not a big amount so you would get away with colour matched spray cans - I have a paint supplies store near me who will make them up from the colour code or colour match

Mate, I'd just look out for a set of smooth top bumper and trims. Bit more spray work needed, but much less sanding down of the trims required. This way you can just remove the arch trims altogether.

Also the later bumpers are one piece, not as much risk of splitting the paint. Otherwise, have a crack at shaving them.

Can you actually take the black part off on the front and back bumpers? And it couldn't be too bad could it? Get a random orbit sander on it and go to town, maybe take a couple of mil off to get rid of the textured bit? And why would it have less chance of cracking as a one piece?

Much easier to get some painted ones off a wreck I would of thought?
