To the Victorian guy: This car is in NSW. We don't have RWC up here. (Thanks for your input).
I only say that because I had to pay over $2,000 for a RWC from my car which I bought in Sydney when I got back to Melbourne, mostly just general wear and tear from the age of it (1995, same as yours). I thought it's a "pink slip" or "safety check" up there or something, however I heard it's nowhere near as restrictive. No, I'm not just trying to be some smart-ass 18 year old, it looks really clean so good luck on the sale.
I remember the days when I bought my car for $10k two years ago and it was in pretty much the same nick as yours.. Two years later and it's had a few dings here and there, and I feel horrible about it. Learnt to drive on that thing and certainly didn't keep it as immaculate as you did. Feelsbadman.
Just thought you'd all be pleased to know that my VR6 sold today, for the full asking price.
All the interest I had was from interstate and even as far away as WA, but the first person to actually get a flight up from Melbourne and see the car bought it straight off.
It was an emotional decision to sell, and I'll really miss the car. Getting what I thought it was worth certainly helps, though.
I'll also miss being a Volkswagen owner. For now, I have an '06 WRX wagon and a '97 306 GTi6.
I bought the WRX 12 months ago with the intention of consolidating into one later model car, but it took 12 months of procrastination to finally bite the bullet and list the VW for sale.
I've really enjoyed being on Watercooled over the years and I'd like to thank all the great people I've met through here, but especially Matt from Camden GTi, Ray for the Yokies and Pierre for the invaluable V-Checker.
You never know, I may return to the Volkswagen fray again someday. Either way I'll be checking in from time to time
Well, it's not really a fair comparison, as the GTi6 is a whole generation newer. The steering is exceptionally direct and solidly weighted, where the VR6 power assistance is light. The Pug's engine sits just behind the front wheels, so it's very balanced, where the VR6 is quite nose heavy. The 306 is engineered for lift off oversteer, where the VR6 is an understeerer. The XU10J4RS engine is a hummingbird, but with loads of torque and is perfectly matched to the six speed box. 167bhp 4cyl plays 171bhp 6cyl. The VR6 is old school: sensible and sedate, but still a ball to drive. It feels more like an older 6 cylinder BMW in a lot of ways. Lazy torque, with a sparkling top end. The VR6 has vices, but you forgive them if you love the kind of car it is. They're really becoming somewhat of a rare vintage (at least in this country) hence why I think mine was able to fetch the full asking price, in its condition. I hope more people decide to preserve these cars.
