  • Best Ignition Coil?

The Golf has had some cold starting problems, and after replacing the EFI fuel filter and the spark plugs, I tracked it down to a fine crack in the ignition coil allowing the spark to jump from the HT terminal across to the body of the coil.
For the moment I have put a big gob of silastic there which has stopped it jumping, but ultimately I want to replace the coil.

I've found a number of different manufacturers for the coil at varying prices on eBay and through some parts stores.
Is there any particular brand that has proven better than the others?

My coil is the square one. Transistorised ignition but still with a distributor.
    1997 mk3 Golf.

I bought a Beru one either from Tooleys (Hornsby) or CamdenGTI (Campbelltown) and it's still working after a couple of years. Did the same for my sister's Polo (they use the same unit) and that's running fine now, though it's only been not much more than a year. I always keep a spare one in the car too, just in case.

Whatever Matt keeps in stock at CamdenGTI, that's probably your best bet as he's changed untold numbers of them, no doubt. Give him a call on 02 4628 0229 or 0423 051 737.

So this is a common problem then?
