where to find a few things....?

apologies for the innocuous title, but i am unsure how to change it once one problem has been solved and i update the thread with new ones.

1. my wiper stalk only works when i wash the windscreen. i cannot use the wipers normally. they dont turn on at all. i have been told that this possibly is a relay issue, if so, where will i find said relay? are there any other possible causes? if not a relay, what would be a rough cost of another wiper stalk?

UPDATE: i got a water pump, happy days! but, i still need help with the above issue please guys!

i will update this as issues come to mind / occur

I'm guessing the relay will be with the other relays on the fuse box? A bently service manual would tell you.

do you guys have an electronic version of the bently service manual? like in PDF or something?

if not, it might be a good suggestion to put to mods to have on the site as a reference tool, it was done many years ago with a gregorys manual for the r31 skyline on r31sc.com

Could see if golf loon has one, but if not, you don't have much choice without spending hundreds at the stealership (and even then, they may not have one for a few days)

Would be much cheaper to get one shipped with express shipping from over seas

ok....relays located no dramas......which one (for those of you who have a bentlys manual or similar) is the one for the wipers and how much should i expect to pay for a new relay, presuming that it is the issue? is it common that the relays fail on the wipers? (sorry if these seem like really basic silly questions, but im jsut trying to learn all i can here)

Relays are under dash, in the back of your VW car manual is a list of the relays. If not search this forum or even google..

Bentley publishers will have it on there website...probably, you can buy a CD / book too

i got a price today from an aussie parts place, water pump was $83. and i could have it tomorrow. surely GAP (who i havent heard back from yet) cant go that low and include postage? i dunno, you guys are the experts on here compared to me.

does anyone know which relay is the one for the wipers and how much i should expect to pay for a new one?

WIPER STALK:
Relay is above the fuses..might need to take offsome plastic bit to get it
Test it there is a video on you tube on how to test a relay. Or bridge it with a wire.
Take off your steering wheel plastic cover bits and see if the connector is still there and on, then test with a voltmeter.... if they are all OK, you'll have to take the windshield water deflectors off and check the connections to the motor.
If not its probably the little metal connection in the stalk...might need to pull that to pieces to get in it. For a temp fix, using the connector at the steering wheel make up a small wire (10cm long) and manually bridge it when you need wipers.

thanks matt, ill pull the covers off tomorrow and check it out.

i can get wipers to work when iwash windscreen with the cricket pissers, but they dont come on normally, so it makes me think that the problem lies in the switch on the stalk.

that's been my experience with German Auto Parts too. Delivered within a week from ordering.
