Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • no spark & no fuel! dead ecu?

    gday

I've just rebuilt the auto trans on my 2.0L 97 golf and when i went to start the car nothing happened, i checked all connections and realized the main positive wire from the battery wasn't connected to the starter and was touching the transmission case. After i rectified that mistake the car still would not start.

Some of the problems i've identified are:

no spark from the coil although there is a single spark when you turn the key to accessory
    no power at the injectors
the speedo drive goes to 200kph (its not connected anyway) when cranking and the right indicator is stuck on ( although im not sure these have to do with the starting issue )

As far as i can tell there is power to the ecu and the black wire at the coil gets switched power. All the fuses in the fuse box are intact and i can hear the fuel pump priming.

    Thanks in advance, Tom.

Is it in N or D??
    Auto Lockout feature?
Try bridging from the main power terminal on the starter to the little jumper connector and see if it then kicks.

sorry, i should have been more specific, the car does turn over it just wont start.

it has no spark ( when holding the lead from the coil to the engine while cranking ) or fuel (i put a test lamp to the injector plug while cranking and didnt see any signs of life ) while turning over but i can hear the fuel pump priming when i turn the key to accessory so it should have fuel pressure at least.

I'm thinking of tracking down a front wiring loom and ecu from another car in an attempt to fix the problem.

does anyone have any ideas i could try instead of loom/ecu replacement?

      Thanks in advance, Tom.

it turns over but doesnt go to idle?

if thats the case, could be the key barrel signal amplifier. so that the ecu says that the key belongs to the car.

          hi,

the car was running fine ( except for the gearbox issues :S ) before, the only thing ive done is removed the gearbox, reinstalled it and without realizing shorted out the entire car ( main power wire that goes to the starter was sitting against the gearbox case )

if i were to get a new ecu, would there be a problem regarding the immobiliser?

A new ECU would have to be coded to the Immobiliser but you can do that with VCDS.
