Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tonnes of Mk3 Questions

I have already made a thread about wheel fitment for MK3's, this is an extension to that.

Basically i am hoping to achieve a comfortable, reliable and cool looking daily Mk3.

Ie retaining interior comforts, stock engine and driveline, with a decent appearance.

    What i want to know...

    1. Wheel Choice

    - Has been suggested to run 16x8 et25 (by this i guess it means +25 offset not backspace?)

    - 195 50 tires

*** I am looking out for a set of Work Equip 003's or Similar, Rota or other cheaper brands accepted, so if there are any out there in these sizes that you see let me know!!! Depends on colour of car i buy...

Wanting Navy Car with White Centered dishy meshies...

    2. Ride Height

    - If possible i would prefer to stay away from coilovers (Due to grey area on coil overs) depending on price - standard struts with lowered springs and suitable shocks would do it for me.

I wanna sit it as low as safely legally possible ie 100 - 120mm

    What options are available??

    3. Interior

    - So the Mk3 Interiors are a bit ****, are there any later model golf seats etc that bolt in? ie are they as nice as nissan with s13 and 14 seats?

Other than that interior will remain standard bar maybe a Nardi or somthing.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am fairly sure that is all i need to know at the moment.

I realize there are a tonne of noob questions that could be googled there but it pays to hear from people who have experienced / know brands etc rather than random reading on google. As well as involved in australia as different parts will be harder to source obviously...

    Any constructive comments are appreciated...

That is basically what i want to achieve,

2 door or 4 door with mesh wheels, prefereably Navy with White Centered Meshies but i am open to change...

    KEEP EVERYTHING LEGAL!!! JUST...

    Just so everyone knows....

lol, if you want legal get rid of those to images bro.

springs will only get you so lol. you may as well run some 16x7 et35 with 194/45 if you want legal and springs only. That can look ok. You can buy BSS RS reps brand new (made by konig) that are 16x7 et35 from the US, then get some 60-40 springs and you're set. All legal and about as good as you'll get without pushing the boundaries.

if you want that car from that pic, coilovers, stretched tyres, low offsets and potential to go wider than 8".

hahaha yeah i realize those two cars are not exactly good examples of legal but it was meant as an indication lol...

          I shall look into it...

Man pretty much everything you said is illegal. Wide wheels, stretched tyres, and cars as low as in those pics will all get defected. I don't know what the laws are like in Queensland but in Vic they are really strict. That red car is from Florida, which is the complete other end of the scale, extremely slack laws for modifications/roadworthies.

To get that sort of look you will have to make some compromises, not everything will be legal, but that is just the way it goes.

oh and providing you don't drive like a knob, it's a VW. Welcome to not getting anywhere near as much attention from the police as a modded s14 etc.

2 great cars up there, I would go coils and maybe not wind them down ridiculously! They def handle better, if you keep stock paint you shouldn't get hassled. I am thinking about respraying mine as matte black is definitely cop bait.

Vr6 seats are probably the easiest upgrade they have actual bolsters not church pews. Will be interesting to see what you cone up with

                      BBS RM.

Probably very similar specs to what dom (dom123) has on his mk 1, although slightly larger tyres.

doubt 16x8 wheels will be legal techincally, and 195/45 tyres wouldnt either. but as said, I think if you don't drive like a dousche you'll probably get away with a lot more then a commodore with cut springs and no exhaust... In the like 8 months of so I've driven my car around with <40mm ground clearanceI havent had an trouble with the police, even though i was supposedly on thier watch list from the neighbours not apreciating the vr6 note and complaining...

Go coilovers, keep em a legal height if your scared... You'll be right If you just get a cup kit your going to soon wish it was coils, especially if you keep looking at photos like those

Yeah I've got not much more to add to this thread, except your choice of tyre (195/50R16) would put the speedo out by more than 10% from the standard 185/60R14 and that would be illegal too.

yeah things like that i am not worried about,

basically i just dont want to be taking off cats eyes with chassis rails and knee capping old ladies on the footpath with poke...

You can get away with alot if it is sedate looking and tidy...

So yeah i am not worried about it being 100% legit legal, it is near on impossible...
