  • MK3 build thread!

    Hi all,

Im starting this thread because i want your opinions positive or negative, (there will be lots of the latter ). I also want your help, advice, and to make some friends!
So, i own a 97 golf cl. Just a plain ol 1.8, 5-speed, nothing fancy lol. Anyway, the car was in terrible condition when i bought it, more rust then metal. but i have managed to get it to the stage of all sanded down with body fill, and its now rust free. My dad is a aircraft body fabricator, so we made our own rocker panels, fender bottoms and floor pans. If you havent realized im on verrrry low budget since im 16 haha. Ill try and get pictures of my progress up tonight.

My first question though is, im painting it myself, I bought a full spray gun set. butttttt, im stuck on colour... Im thinking this earthy chocolate brown i saw in the latest performance vw mag, do a matte black rat look, or a nice white white with royale blue stripe (the original canadian racing colours)

    So any imput?

Sounds like youve done some god work so far! keep it up.

colour is a very personal choice... Find something you like and go for it If you've got all the equiptment and thin you could do a reall nice glossy paint job id do that over a matte one, itll just look like brand new and not like you just hit it with some spray cans...

I've always been a sucker for aviator grey

Jump onto photobucket.com and upload pictures to there, these post the link here

I'm liking the aviator grey also, but it is a personal choice when it comes to colour. I've seen both mk3's ratted up and clean, I reckon clean is where it's at, but up to you mate.

16, mate wish I had a golf at 16, all I had was a pos pulsar..

Go the brown in flat, check out a dude called dehate on Vw vortex he used to have his car painted like that - it was nice! Also that Aviator grey is a win. No stripes IMO, i just cant say it looks good on any car.

go hard while your at it
              put a 16v or a vr6 lump in it !!
iv seen some where if you get the wheels right, brown can look pritty dope. depending if your going matte or gloss finish, the black plastics can make a nice touch

I got payed yesterday, so i ordered myself a vr6 front spoiler and leather shift boot! ( i know, big spender )

Well, home sick with a sinus infection But gives me time to get some things done.
                        Decided to debadge the hatch

And my terrible looking engine bay. (note- the sketchy intake was not my doing...)

I also got the new plugs, wires, rotor, and cap, fuel filter, and oil filter fitted!

Well, not sure if anyone cares but, im having fun haha
So my wondeful dash the previous owner decided to paint

Took all the little bits and things off

worked in the fender some, still needs a few bends and tweaks

                          Anywhoo,
So what should i have the body sanded to (what grit) before i shoot primer?
Also, i decided to just go with white paint, i find it looks so clean. but what should i do with the rubber rub strips? leave black or paint them white? Also any thoughts on dash bits? back to black, or maybe carry the white into the interior a little?

                          Imput please!

black dash parts for sure man, should de-rear wiper it and flare those guards out a bit whilst its not painted
                            Radiators are over rated

Personally I think you should keep the dash black, Im not a fan of coloured dashes myself.
