Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Spotted on carsales...

Hey guys, ive been lurking carsales for months now in search of a nice, affordable Mk3 and have found the perfect one. But there are a few things I'm concerned about...
    A. The price is set for $1400. According to the listing, everything is in working condition but it may need a clutch replacement soon. What could possibly make the owner only want 1400 for such a car?
    B. How much would a clutch replacement cost (including labour)?
    C. Does anyone else reckon this is shifty?

It does seem very cheap, but then I have only been in the VW scene for a couple of months, so no expert.

Aren't FWD cars traditionally more expensive to get clutches replaced in?

Never know, my subaru blew its engine recently, and I sold it minus the repair costs, so maybe the owner is just doing the same, just saving his time / effort and dollars and selling it as such......

My opinion: Your best bet is to contact them i.e. actually call them up for a chat, if you think it's suss avoid it, if you're willing to take a punt on a cheap car jump on it and protect yourself contractually e.g. purchase on condition of blah blah blah, refund of deposit in full.... If it's not a mistake or scam or dodgy car, it will sell quick I'd say.

If there's anything about them being overseas and sending the money via anywhere other than actually turning up on their doorstep AVOID.

      That's just my take anyway.

proceed with caution. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Take a look at it, see its all nice, if you get serious, have it inspected by a trustworthy vag mechanic, and make sure its not stolen or a write off or something...

Thanks guys. Might get dad to ring the bloke and enquire about it. Dad was also surprised at the price but is always worried that "something has to be wrong" when it's that cheap. Just doesn't want it being a money pit for me /:

I'd be curious about the condition of the A/C system and heater core.

I am in the process of trying to buy a Mk1 Cabriolet, I am not much of a mechanic, just basic knowledge and personal experience, the last three Cabs have been interstate (lots more in Vic and NSW) I have asked the owner to send them to the local VW person, if they refuse I walk away, and I have now spent a little bit (they charge about $100) on making sure it is sound. The independent VW guys I have used have all been very knowledgeable and not been shy about telling me all the car's troubles, and I use the ones recommended on here. Its well worth it, latest one is being checked out tomorrow in Melbourne. My suggestion is to be patient and wait, watch what prices things are going for, and see whether prices are dropping the longer they stay on carsales.

mate no one can tell you without looking at the car in question ( beside the replacement of clutch as stated in the ad ) . what Water Boy stated are common things that play up in all mk3's , best bet is to do a bit of research and gain some knowledge on mk3's or have a VAG mechanic give it a once over before you part with some $

                            good luck
