theres a , what appears to be , a tidy red GL "Classic" for less than the white one discussed above.

what differences are there between thhe 2 and 1.8 ltr engines themselves?

The 1.8L engines are eager, not much difference compared to the 2L, provided both are Manual.

I currently have a 1998 model CL for sale in the classifieds and now on ebay.
Its red and I have just replaced the Timing belt, waterpump and Clutch and given it a full service. I dont have the logbooks, but it is very tidy. 142kms.

Mk3s are very long lived, but find a tidy one with working AC and Heater.
