VR6 Engine rebuild...

Just say I want to rebuild a spare VR6 engine in a few years, and to spread the $$ damage out, can I possibly start stock piling individual parts such as pistons, cams and other parts (suggestions please) or do I need to pull the engine apart for measurements first?

Obviously rings, bearings etc will need to be done at that stage, guess what I am asking is can I get a head start with some of the goodies parts?

Sure you can, do some research on the vortex (12v vr6 section has a lot of technical information, and theres a fair bit in the mk3 section too) and find out what you want to do with the motor, a good read if you havent already is VWVortex.com - How to build a relatively inexpensive, reliable, powerful Vr6..

No real need to pull things out and measure, just fin parts for the 2.8 12v mk3 vr6 on sites like mjmautohaus (have read mixed reviews on them, but they have a big range and is cheap), tmtuning, ecs, ect ect.

If you're going to be replacing everything, may aswell get some more power out of it a head job would do wonders, some semi-mild cams (268 or 262), you could bore the block out some and get bigger pistons increasing the displacement a little, a mk4 headgasket would be well worth while as well as it bumps compression slightly, do some research, the possibilities are endless... There are NA 12v VR6's out there running like high 11's. Ofcouse you could go the FI route and do tat for 1/4 the cost...

Imagine fi on a built engine... I'm looking into it, but with what I did (cams, head work, oversized pistons etc) I got a 40% (140kwatw) power increase. Without exhaust, intake and computer - I need to pull my finger out and finish it...

mmmmm built turbo vr6.... >=] although a built na would still be a lot of fun... ive herd until like 100km/h a properly built na is just as fast as a turbo vr6.

a 3.94 ring an pinion would add some fun, not that thats the engine, hah

I also have savings issues......much easier to stockpile parts than money...either way, this is about 2 years away, have to pay for the cars first, but thank you to every one for their advice.

And no, there will be no turbo :-p

Tim's right. stockpile money, most of the parts you can just buy when you need them. Unless you decided to 'build' it then keep your eye out for a shrick inlet manifold

just an expensive intake manifold thatll give you like 5kw. A bit of a waste really.

and make a massive difference to the low down torque & power curve. Single best investment for an NA motor. Well maybe not single best, but if I was to be building an all motor VR, it'd have a schrick!

I just put a heat shield around my pod and that has made a massive difference in the low revs. I'd post a pic but I've only got the net on my phone
