Haha, I know what you mean about being busy during semester. I'm done with exams and I'm after a project to get stuck into.
I look forward to seeing this one done and at one of the meets and having another chat with you mate. Good work so far.Mk3.Mk4.Mk1

Do it mang, if you have the space, money, and time, have a crack at something interesting Mmmmmmmmmk2 GTI? Yeah, so happy uni is over for a few weeks so I can have a stuff about with the car.
Stripped the grey carpet out (speak now if anyone wants it, it's sitting on top of the bin) along with plastic mouldings, re-carpeted with used VR6 black carpet, plastic trim and seats. Replaced faulty window regs and VR6 door cards replaced grey GL ones. Lost the centre arm rest, but gained some back headrests. I'm getting old because I left all the sound deadening alone.
Note OBD 1 v OBD 2 obsessors, see how the grab handle on the door is one piece on the older card, and two piece in the newer... serious upgrade huh? Also, the blank panel gained a tweater, and the speaker mesh in OBD 1 hid an empty hole. Earlier card has trim all the way down, along with carpet on the outside of the map pocket, that disappeared, and the old card had a light at the bottom corner and the newer doesn't (no idea why they'd ditch that, seems like a good idea with open doors on a dark road.)
Have had some awesome people helping out, so thanks for those who have dropped by and thrown some tools at it with me! Have more plans on the way, its all OEM stuff so don't expect insane engine swaps and turbos and the likes... just cleaning up a daily.
That second pic is starting to annoy me because I can see trim that isn't clipped in, think it might have been done since the pic, but will fix it up tomorrow.

The blank panels had tweeters in them in obd1's, maybe someones changed the speakers in yours? My obd1 door cards dont have carpet on them or that light either...Originally posted by VW Imposter View PostNote OBD 1 v OBD 2 obsessors, see how the grab handle on the door is one piece on the older card, and two piece in the newer... serious upgrade huh? Ah ok, must just be the Vento and Colourconcepts that got the carpet and light down the bottom. Going to try and run some decent speakers off the stock headunit, just because it has that Aux in at the front and it's nice and 1995 OEM, something about the pop off faceplates have always annoyed me. Have some spare speakers and amp etc lying around, but just dreading pulling off all the door cards at this moment.Originally posted by sortofbigbj View PostThe blank panels had tweeters in them in obd1's, maybe someones changed the speakers in yours? Has anyone run an amp off the stock headunit? I don't really care that much about sound but if I can get it sounding ok I may as well.

I haven't ran an amp off the mk3 stock head unit, but have done it with other stock head units in other cars for people, just need a signal convetor thing which you can pick up at Jaycar for like $15, run speaker wires from the head unit to it, then rca's from it to your amp. A new head unit will probably give nicer sound quality, but no harm in trying though, im sure it will be a big improvement.
A set of component speakers (mid range woofer and tweeter) will sound much nicer then coaxials.. The amped stock splits in my vr6 sound amazing (when you put a sub in and take the bass away from the speakers with a high pass filter atleast, otherwise they distort pretty easy), much nicer then a $120 pair of "3 way" coaxial speakers I put it when I blew one of the stock tweeters feedng it 5x the wattage they were designed to take, In the end changed back to the stock speakers with some new tweeters from Jaycar, sounds much much nicer.Last edited by Ben J; 01-07-2011, 09:56 PM.sigpic
