I know this thread is old but I'm looking at doing this. I know you can buy guard rollers on eBay but am keen to know results from a mallet or the price they paid to get it done. Pretty much just trying to figure out the best way to do it. Thanks
think the roller I used came from ebay. (wasnt mine)
was happy considering the arches were already raped and it was a cold day when we did it.
Saw the rollers on eBay can get one for under $100 so that's probably the way I'll go unless I can find someone who can do it cheap. After looking up other peoples attempts with mallets and baseball bats I'm not taking the risk of needing new guards.
I've recently done all the gaurds on my new white mk3 with a proper fender roller I borrowed from alex. It may be because my struts are just too short (compared to the stock suspenion and even coilovers they're very small) and I had to use the thing on the smallest setting and couldn't angle the roller part as I would have like too, but I think I did a better job on my old mk3's front fenders with just a hammer then I could with the roller. Where the holes for the fender liners are in the lips on the front it left dents and I cant figure out a way to stop that.
Backs turned out perfect though. First you have to get rid of all the sealer stuff that is in the corner or the lip thing (and there is a LOT of it) or else it will barely roll at all. I took it back to bare metal and then gave it a quick coat of unerbody coating paint stuff to stop it from rusting. Found the best way to get rid of it all was to heat it up until it was really hot with a heat gun (smoke will poor out, probably best to wear a mask or something, I doubt it did my body any good) to soften it up, and then hit it with a die grinder, followed by a wire wheel and then scraped whatever was left out with a knife. Takes a bit of effort (and I sliced my thumb through the nail and all) but is worth doing to get them as flat as possible. After I did them with the gaurd roller I pulled them a little further with the phone book method (which is really, really easy when you have bags dont need to worry about jacks and stuff, just hit those switches ) and I think they're pretty damn good if I may say so myself.
I tried doing the phone book way i was to scared to drop the car so i ended up buying a proper roller haha any tips when rolling guards so i dont bend the fenders doesnt really matter if i crack the paint since im getting a respray !
I'd say just go slow, don't put too much pressure on it and just work away at it until you're happy. You'll get a feel for it pretty fast. Chances are you will get a little "dent" (for lack of a better word) on the front where the holes are for the fender liners, I really don't know any way of avoiding that and have seen professional jobs exactly the same, so there mustnt be an easy way around it. If you're getting it resprayed though it would be easy to get them to fill it though to get it looking perfect. Backs are easy once you get all the sealer out
I recall an item on TV where they used a baseball bat and used it between the tyre and the guard edge to toll it. Basically the bat was wedged in between the tyre edge and the guard and the vehicle rolled forward pulling the baseball bat with it.

thats worse than a phonebook :$ i would like to keep my guards
The rolling is the easy part, the hard part is keeping the heat just right and trying to not crack the paint. From experience it's a bit hit and miss, rolled my mk1 guards WITHOUT a heat gun at all and they turned out beautiful and didnt crack at all, yet I've rolled plenty of other cars with a heatgun and have suffered paint cracking. It's just something you have to live with..
well im going to have to see for myself then . ill be taking pictures of progress when i start . i had to send my wheels back to the shop because it didnt come out 100% lucky there doing it for free also waiting for my roller to arrive
It's SO worth it
Today I "Hammer" finished the guard rolling we started a while back Josh. Wait till you see it now...
Funnily enough, I did less damage with hammer/no heat gun, than with heat gun and roller!
Note to OP...you may have to undo/drop your struts to get your roller attached and adjusted/angled properly.
Pete.
Ive started playing around with height and camber adjustments today and got it this far without the tyres scraping on the guards.but to me the car sits too high and it needs minor guard rolling.sorry its a bad quality pic I only had time to work on it after work. i want to go at least 25mm lower also ive started repraying my black bumper and door trims it was fading out and needed a refresh you can tell by the front lip ill be buying a set of guard flares since mine were all broken
