Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK3 TDI with high kms - anyone with experience?

    Hi Guys,

Ive stumbled across someone willing to part with a 96 mk3 TDI. The car is in good nick in general i am yet to inspect or drive it.

My concern is that it has 271,000 kms on it! So basic gist of where Im going is how reliable are the engines? what is likely to go wrong with it? has anyone had much experience with a mk3 tdi with high kms?

I know theres not many but i know there's a few owners on here; so Jarred, Aidan, and whoever has some useful tips and/or advice shoot away!

    happy festivus,

    Dom

mines about to tick over 200,00kms. I had to get the injector pump replaced, as the old one was leaking. Turbo might get old and die on day, but i'm expecting the engine to go on for a while yet. Don't have any hard evidence though

Cost atleast ~2K to get a reco-ed injector pump from the states and have my mechanic install it (altough I had a service done at the time too, which was a couple hundy)

Mines chipped and got injectors ( I believe) without them, I can imagine it being a bit sluggish, depends how much the asking price is really, and if the value is really worth it over a CL, which is also bullet proof and does pretty good economy. I get 6.5l/100kms, pretty much all city/traffic driving, and well, pretty lead footed. If you pick up what putting down?

242,000 kms on the clock, bought it blind 5 years ago from a Sydney auction, trucked it up to SEQ, the only problems have been small niggly ones, and nothing as far as the engine is concerned. Its still going strong (everyone mentions the acceleration when they borrow it) and has none of the electronics and DPF problems of today's diesels.

the 1z is up there with all the best vw diesel engines. it will generally run forever.

My aaz (very similar engine but not direct injection) is making double the stock hp and i've got 288k on it. no signs of stopping any time soon.

My TDI has had no major Mechanical problems over the 10 years that it has been in my family, just looked through the log book.
It's now at 280k, I need to get new engine mounts (Gotta find Diesel mounts not the Petrol engine ones) and a new CV joint.
              But that's about it.

i also bought my aaz through another member of this forum
i have one fairly moderate problem that needs attention
the v belt has a tensioner pully that rattles
and you cant fix it with out a new one
i cant find where to buy one
so im opting for a serpentine belt conversion kit from ina

other than the usual oil leak its a strong engine
