Dunno what the book says, but very tight. I use a low setting on a rattle gun. If you buy new bolts from VW, they come with thread locker on, you could use some aftermarket product if reusing the original bolts.

Well, thanks to everyone who offered advise, special thanks to Matt who came in at short notice re the flywheel bolts.
It wasn't the easiest, but there are harder clutches out there. At least we used all the parts and apart from accidently disposing of the gearbox fluid (it is supposed to used for life) and trying to remove the clutch cable with the gearbox inplace (much easier with the box out), it was a fairly trouble free day. Old clutch was toast, only issue now is a worn bush that surrounds the selecter shaft. 1st can be hard to get and there is too much play in the lever.
Interestingly I was "testing" my clutch operation on the way home lined up besides a CBR900rr, he proceded to fly past me, on one wheel...for about 200 meters, getting faster!!
I should also mention rear main seal is definately worth doing whilst the box is out, as well as the throw out bearing..I did both, $45 for the rear main and $8 for the bearing.
