1.8 CL erratic idle problem

I have an annoying problem with my 1.8 CL mk3.

Most of the time when the car is idling, it surges between about 600-1200 rpms. It will quickly surge up to 1200, idle there for a few seconds, then suddenly drop to 600 and surge back up again. Over and over.

I will make a video of what the tach is doing if it helps explain better.

I pretty much have no idea where to start as I am more familiar with VRs. Any help would be sweet.

im sorta guessing but it might your MAF, also check the pipe after the MAF for any cracks. might be sucking in unknown air.
