Hmmmm vw do make some crap parts, im sure the mk3 regs where designed to keep the parts guys in a job

What happens when you put the key in the doorlock and give it a halfturn?
Do this when the windows are down, you need to hold that key in that lock position for a sec or so...now do the reverse, hold the key, does the car unlock and the windows drop?

I might be able to help but need to know alittle about the system first.

Do the VR6's have the convenient close?
Meaning can you close/ open all the glass incl. sunroof from the driver's door lock?

Also, does the VR6 have a body ECU of sort's. Or what actually control's/power's the window reg. Where does the power come from?

If anything, try a battery teminal reset This can cure ton's of problem's.

A VR6 from late 94 on should have 'total closure' incl sunroof from that drivers lock (standing outside the car) well, they do here incl the GTIs and some CLI/GLIs do it too

But its not really helping the issue, its more trying to find out where the problem is (it might be in the lock itself)

I wish i had my manual here (a mate has borrowed it) as my next place to check would be the relay...so cant even tell you the # to pull out and check it

What sound comes from the window? if it is clicking or humming when the window is moving it means the motor is proboley ok...you can retro fit manual winders to all the mk3s with power windows it uses the same reg and all you do is drill a hole through to it, and fit the handle to it (vw can sell you this)

          Oh I forgot.

Is the door plug on the A-pillar or door a sealed type. Water ingress has plagued BM's with the same kind a fault, plus many more through these plug's

hi svedo... firstly welcome to this forum.
Congrats on your new golf as well.

I had exactly your same problem there, go half way stuck and droped during driving also magically moving on a slop as well...

I literally had mine replaced yesterday by our very trustworthy mechanic on the forum. But the regulator/ motor unit died on me this morning, very upset. It is no bodies fault except VWs.

Golf loon (matt) is the man who could help you. perhaps private message him, he may have the right window for you.

hehe, I'm not sure for how much longer this will keep working for me tho, had it already go happen on the motorway, dont need it on the motorway + rain.

I've got access to eBahn for the online bentley manual (I hear this is the mother of all mk3 books and presume its the same as the paper version?), but with my limited knowledge of wiring diagrams, its proving difficult ! Was hoping to disconnect all the auxilary things that use the power window wires, for a 'process of elimination session' but again, too limited knowledge..

When its 'stuck' down, every time you hook the window up, it clicks about 2-3 times, and stops.. No switch or key can over ride it..

I think its sealed to a point, its a pretty snug fit when its all hooked up.. Cant see any visable signs of moisture in there though - this has been plaguing me for a good few months..

Thanks Soundofav6 I've had the vr for close to 8 months - yet took me up until a month or so ago to find you guys!

Thanks for that, I'll try get in contact with Matt and see what he has to say!

                hey svedo,

Just wondering how u went with the power window issue. A few days ago mine stopped working alltogether (drivers window). then this morning when I got to work, shut the door the window went down by itself. Put the key in and start up it went!!! turned if off hoped out, locked it via aftermarket keyless and down it went. It went up. Then i locked it with key. It STAYED UP!!! Yay! this was 9:00am. finished work at 4:00 only to find the bloody window down. Luckily nothing was stolen. And all this afternoon the window was going up, down, half way, jurking up, jurking down. Same symtoms as you Svedo!!

                Has anyone found the cause?

                  Heya,

Yep we found the issue - should have posted it up earlier... It was infact the power window motor... I managed to get a replacement courtesy of Golf Loon (Thanks again mate! )... 2+ weeks have gone by, and no issues at all *touch wood*.. The old motor was an aftermarket one, was only just hitting 4 years old going on the MFG date stamped on it too which i thought was pretty poor...

The even easier way is of course to disconnect the motor in the door and drive around like I did for months on end without a drviers window

                  Hope this helps!

I never had that sorta problems but i noticed while replacing a regulator that if the power window struggles to move up, it will suddenly stop and wind all the way down (maybe due to the mechanics of auto wind down/up). If the window struggles to get up or down then im almost certain its a regulator.

Edit: or maybe not lol ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

                      Thanks Svedo

Thats does help. I will disconnect the window untill ill get a new motor.

                      Cheers for the help mate

Before u go buying replacement parts, one weekend when u have time free take the whole mechanism out and test the motor by itself. Although the motor wont be under any load it will give u an idea of whats gone wrong!!

yea i plan too. Just do a general check over. the old man is a mechanic so that helps.

                          Just narrows the problem down
