  • Possessed Power Window?

    Hey All,

I've read up quite a bit on the power window issues that the Mk3's seem to have, but haven't really come across anything like mine.. So am a bit lost as to where to start pulling things apart - I'm new to the VWs..

Was sitting in traffic, and the drivers window decided it wanted to go down all by itself... Fair enough I think to myself, I'll just hit up on the switch, and that will be that.. Switch not working - and no clunking noise from the motor either.. Around 5 minutes later, try putting the window up, and it did infact go up.. 30 seconds later, it decides to go down half way, and starts going up and down within a few inches every couple of seconds, again my switch doing bugger all to try override it.. Minutes pass again, switch works again, window up.. Got to where I needed to be, as soon as the engine was turned off, power window goes all the way down again, switch does nothing (with the ignition back on), and tried the window close function on the keylock, which does nothing either. 30 minutes later, i use the switch, window goes up, and i just disconnect the motor in the door... Get home, pull it all apart again, window works fine, was making it go up and down for around 15 minutes, so left it connected.. Next morning, as soon as the key hit the ignition, window goes all the way down, and switch not working to override it..

Has anyone had anything like this happen? Not sure if these windows have a 'safety' feature that might be malfunctioning?

    Cheers!

i wonder if you might have a short in your switch? there may simply be dust in the switch. i have seen nissan pathfinders do this. you would wind the window up, it would get to the top, and go halfway down again. i cant remember what fixed it.

Give it a blow with a compressor, or wash it out in distilled water and then give it a good blow.

        hey guys,

thanks for the feedback.. I took the switch apart this arvo for a thorough clean, put it back together, worked well for about an hour on the road, as soon I stopped it, got out for 5 mins and started it up, back to the same old problem. Though I noticed this time, if I reconnected the window, I'd hear the motor 'clicking' as though it was being told to go in a direction and this was without the switch being attached..

        Any other ideas?

Is the window going up and down smoothly? I'd just say to hell with it and replace regulator + motor but thats only coz ive done a few now and i hate the bloody things so much!!!

To make things even more confusing, if the window is stuck down, if i disconnect the battery for 30-60 seconds, and reconnect, window winds itself up without me doing a thing, and no key etc in the ignition..

Gotta love those regs. I've never had this kind of problem - they just fail on me. My best bet is that they're on its way out, a replacement may be worthwhile.

I think i know what it is, your total closure is playing funny buggers. do you have an aftermarket alarm?

hrm, are you a bit handy? try disconnecting the connector on the key barrel.

Ha ha ha, Im having the same problem occasionally, once mine went down when the car was locked... not real sure how, I think it has something to do with the security system in the car, still has power or something...

BlackVr6ix - Just gave that a whirl, no go.. All over windows work fine with that switch too, drivers only seems to have the up function that occasionally works after a disconnect/reconnect of the battery.

Whist - well when it first happened, that was my main concern, has a mind of its own with or without the ignition being on - hence living without the window for over 3 months

I wonder if you are still covered with insurance if your window is left down...

My guess is that it would be the switch but Im not very familiar with the power window system. perhaps its the switch its self, might be worth getting a price on a replacement. I think I will do the same.

Switch has kind of been ruled out, as it does its thing even without the switch connected..

Thanks for the replies thus far guys..Appreciate it..!!
