all those things sound pretty standard, our engine mounts should be the cheapest to replace...

MK3 Golf auto

Ihave just recentley bought a mk 3 golf auto no major drama's yet .it is 1998 model just clicked over 110 thousand ks

In the UK:

96 1.9 Tdi 5dr Mars Red, sunroof. Lovely car, reasonably quick, economical. Nothing ever went wrong. Always did everything expected of it.

96 2.0 8v Gti Colour Campaign in Black with black leather. Clutch was on the way out but never actually failed. Very slow and very stodgy handling for something called a "Gti". Nothing ever went wrong though and it looked quite good and had a good spec.

Previously also an 81 Golf 1.3, and 85 Scirocco GLX and an 88 Passat 1.8. All great cars with no faults except the Scirocco needed an exhaust at 80,000 miles. Also the Scirocco was so low and such a dark colour that I had to paint the grille flouro orange to stop people pulling out into me at side junctions.

In Oz:

95 2.0 8v Cabriolet 121,000 kms in dark green metallic is my current daily user.

Bad points:
Slow. Even worse handling than the 96 Gti. The paint scratches and chips very easily. The light grey cloth interior is disastrous for a beach car.

Good points:
Economical (7.7L/100kms) and very reliable. Uses no oil. Clutch survives reversing out of the steepest curviest drive I've ever seen. And it's a 4 seat (or 2 plus Golden Retriever) convertible with an electric roof, which is great for Oz weather so I'm going to upgrade the motor and the suspension to make it more satisfying to drive.

from new to 330,000 km

Have to say this car has been unbelievably reliable.
Clutch went after about 180,000
Front Brake Pads last 100,000, rears 190,000!!
Paintwork is incredibly resilient after being outdoors for 13 yrs
Fuel Pump went at 190,000
Starter at about 150,000
1st Coil Pack at 280,000 2nd at 310,000
A Few little bits and pieces such as sensors etc
All in all an incredibly reliable and tough quality car. Cheap as hell to run.
Same engine, gearbox,exhaust etc
