  • VR6's vs gtis

why do vr6's sell for relatevly cheap...?? are they unreliable? are they expensive to fix?

basically i guess what id like to know is this... if you had $10 000 would you buy a mk2 gti (and use the rest of the money to "do it up") or buy a VR6 ? and please give reasons why...

            I dont think its a conversion. He has a Mk3 VR6 2door.

            See the snow pics post.

I like what TassieGTI has done with his Mk1 16v!

I believe VR6 motors to be reliable and go hard, but need lots of servicing and all parts for them are expensive. For you Marlo, I reckon a Mk2.

              I own a mk2 GTI and a VR6
A mk2 is an 80's car and is sort of dated. (not as classic as a mk1)
The VR6 is a 90's car with the most brilliant motor VW ever produced,( anyone can turbo an old 4 cylinder)
They truly are the best buy in my mind.Put on an exhaust and listen to that sound of 6 cylinders. Heaven
Yes have had a mk4 1.8 t and was let down a bit.
Best VW for ten grand anywhere anytime.
You pay that much for a 2.0 GL and the VR6 has uprated everything by comparison.
              I'll say no more.

I have owned all four models! The VR6 is a great motor and boy does it sound good with an exhaust system! Heaps of torque and plenty of grunt to throw you back in your seat! To me the best motor made by VW, but have yet to experience the R32! Mk4 GTi was a let down for me! Too many extras that inhibities the driving experience and not enough grunt! Although it has more power, I suspect the MK5 GTi might be the same! The motor is obviously highly tunable if you have the urge and money!
Can't go past the MK1 GTi for a great drive and loads of fun, but to me not an ideal daily driver! The MK2 GTi is also a great car, but caught in the middle (not a classic and not a modern car) and looks a bit dated! The VR6 gives me the best of both Worlds. A very refined smooth daily driver that goes like stink when you feel the need for some aggressive driving! Great value money! Parts might be expensive, but have had no problems so far!
Love that classic look of the MK1 GTi, but think the MK3 looks sweet when lowered with a set of 17s! Obviously our problem is the fact that we only get the 5 door models in Australia!

So for me, the VR6 would be the go!

Had a white 94 VR6 - great car - agree it was a great sleeper though torque steer, heavy foot and wet roads were always an interesting combination - sold it back in 2000 - just another one of the stupid things I have done

With used 99-00 model GTI's going for around 16 - 19k, and with K04 turbo kits costing around 5k, that would be a quick little unit for low 20's.

vr6=10,000 plus 10,000 in the motor and u'd have a 12's in the quarter.

Not sure where you guys are looking, but you'd be very lucky to pick up a MK4 GTi for 16k and a VR6 for 8k!
