  • Vr6 help

Hey guys was just looking for some advice. How much could a really bad vr6 cost to make good again? Assuming it has most if not all the common problems such as heater core and window regulators? Most of these would need to be including labour as although I am a car nut I do not really understand how to take apart a dash to replace the heater core.

    Thanks in advance, Mac

if you include heater core, window regs, timing chains, clutch, cooling system, coilpack, leads, fuel pump, ABS, probly lots of other stuff i cant think of right now. You will be looking at approximately the value of the car or more in repairs

        Bad motor or bad car?

I'd say, if you are doing absolutely 0 work yourself, keep the car you have for spares and look for a VR6 gthats in far better nick (in the 5k-6k mark) and use that as your car.

By the time you take into account suspension, radiator, clutch, timing chains, heater core, window regs the cost adds up pretty quickly (cost of parts + labour to do it for you).

If you haven't bought one yet, you aren't going to say "I'm definitely not going to buy that one because the heater core is bypassed" so that's less of a necessity. But the other problems, could save you a lot of dramas down the road if you hang on and/or pay an extra $500 asking price for one in better nick/replacements completed and give yourself the time to comeplete the other less important repairs later...

What if I said it was for about $1500 and I have a budget with rego and insurance of about $5500-6000?

depends on how bad the car is. You can easily spend 5k+ fixing a problem car if you arent able to do the work yourself.

Ok so I think that I am getting the feeling that this is a very poor move unless I get extremely lucky and it turns out to be good

heater core alone... how much are you looking at spending on repairs? worst case scenario?

                    get the car for 1500.
see exactly whats "wrong" with it (immediately - ie not pass blue slip)
do the research (DIY, manuals (buy the bentley!!), etc)
                    get quotes for repairs
                    do up a price list
see what you can do yourself and what you need to pay for...

if you can afford it, there you go.
if you can't, part the car out. sell the gear on here for decent money (people here get it at good money, you make more than what you paid)

get the car checked by someone that knows their way around them maybe. Could be the bargain of the century? Impossible to say.. A bad VR6 really can be a money pit though.

Depends whats wrong with it, if say the heatercore aircon and all the windows are broken, that will be a couple thousand, windows probably a couple hundred each. But if the engine is still going strong and the body looks alright, then 1500 could be a very good price. Not like you need heating/ac ect. having it checked out by a mechanic/someone who knows there mk3 vr6's could be a good idea
