Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • auto tranny finally died (2.0 8v box)

    hey everyone,

my auto box finally packed it in tonight, got a spare sitting in the garage from a cordoba with 100,000 less klms on it, anyone know how long it would take a novice to swap it over? will a jack and axle stands be enough for this sort of job?

    cheers

I'd say take it to a mechanic...not something i'd wanna attempt without prior knowledge. Also i'd imagine some specialist tools may be involved...

I've got no idea whats involved but I do know that your best option is to just convert to manual because mk3 auto boxes are rubbish..

Thats a very true word mate.

I would rather do the conversion than try my luck with a random auto.

Plus, the 1.8 and 2L boxes are not the same.

There are a few kinds. One type has a dipstick below the starter and a dipstick with a red or yellow handlle. It says on that what sort of fluid it takes.

The 1.8CL ones with a dipstick take dextron 3 and I reckon are the most reliable. All the others take vw specific fluid.

The other type has a black plug at the top of the pan under the starter and cannot be topped up.

Within these 2 types, there are many codes.

The codes do not matter so much, but the number of connections on the top of the box matter greatly. If they do not have the same number of connectors, it wont work.

Wouldnt try this job at home, there are many pitfalls for the novice.

Check whether the 2 boxes you have are the same. i`m thinking they are not.
