  • Fitting 02j gearbox to mk3 vr6 golf

    HI there All,

I am considering fitting a new 02j gearbox to my AAA vr6 mk3 golf and was wondering of anyone had undertaken this task - reasons for doing so is current gearbox 02a availability + my gearbox is dead (shunted output shaft through casing!!!)

I need to know what can be used from current setup and what is needed for 02j to work

    Any help appreciated

    Cheers

Make sure you get the correct ratio 02J.

Are you thinking of getting it from a new bettle, Audi or Mk4 GTI.

Im pretty sure its the same mounts and you just need to change the shifter set-up as although they are both cable shift the 02J set-up is different.

Cool so some more info the exact code I am looking at

      02J 300 048 E

I have read in other forums that the 02a starter motor wont fit & needs to be one from 02J and that the shift mechanism (in car) needs to be from mk4 too. This one should also have the 108mm flanges (non bolt type) for Vr6

If anyone can confirm this or let me know what parts from original mk3 02a setup can be used and what cant be used.

So far options are 02j with 02a shift mechanism keep the rest
02j with 02j shift mechanism replace shifter with mk4 with some mods

the things I am not clear on are mainly pros cons of 02j shift mechanism + issues with the starter motor + ratios of the new gearbox

      here are the originals

      CCM====3.300=1.944=1.308=1.034=0.838=3.389==VR6 Passat, Jetta, Golf

here is the replacement (not sure if 100% accurate or matches code from new)

      TRANSMISSION, 5 SPEED, 6 CYL 3.38 FINAL DRIVE, 108MM FLANGE, 1: 3.30, 3: 1.31, 5: 0.84, 2: 1.94, 4: 1.03, 99-05 GOLF, 99-04 GOLF/JETTA

So would rev a little higher in all gears in comparison to the original????

      Thanks for your help

Is there really not enough 02A's around to find one? Or did I misunderstand your post.

4 cylinder boxes have different bellhousings to 5 and 6 cylinder ones and are not compatable
I have a V5 Bora one here which will have great ratios for your car and which will bolt straight on.
Also 10 years newer than a Mk3 box.

            HI Vr6child

It is just that I have heard/read that the o2j is far superior shift wise etc, I still need to know the particulars involved in this swap. 02a is around 1600+ rebuilt and I dont want to go SH - 02j BRAND Spanker $1850 delivered. This is wht I am considering the swap. I have ownded 2 vr6 that have killed 02a
