    • Yeah its a shame, I just had an idea though. He didnt scotchbrite the car before he rattle canned it and the matte black paint comes off really easy. I just noticed sortofbigbj's car is back with him - if the hood and passenger guard are ok (mine have bog in them) I might try andget them off him and rub the rest of the black off! Then the car should match and be back to OG paint!
Still waiting for James to get back to me on the recaro interior ( he has to check out shipping ) but if its semi reasonable I'm in!

If I can get the original paint looking good - I will go nuts on this thing!! Been holding back cause the body looked so average and debating whether I should respray it or flip it and buy a b5 passat wagon! ( I have a thing for bagged b5's at the moment!)

      • I hate to say it, but good luck getting the black paint off without damaging the OG colour underneath

        • did the previous owner just use rattle can matte black? if so it's probably enamel paint and you can just use enamel thinners which will 'melt' the black and it should just rub off on the rag with the thinners, leaving the original paint unharmed underneath.

worth a try instead of sanding and risking damage to the original paint i suppose, good luck anyway

          • yeah it was about 1 and a half coats of matte black enamel (or possibly acrylic) but I can rub it off with cutting compound and its shiny under there! The question is do I rub it off, get Bens bonnet and another guard (and maybe get that colour matched, which sounds hard) and go back to the OG colour.
Or do I stick with the other plan and keep trying to find a vento bonnet and then get the whole car resprayed!

I have been planning to try and do something inspired by this photoshop but now I'm torn and not sure i'll ever get a vento bonnet!!

Have been looking into getting one from the US but they are not keen on shipping (not suprisingly!)

            • If its just the one fender with bog in it, you could probably just get that one sprayed to match

              • That photoshop looks ace.
Imagining that in real life and I reckon that'd work well!

                • My vote is to strip it pack to it's former glory.

When i was looking at buying this i had full intention of taking it back as the black looked like it hadn't stuck that well and the oem paint seemed to be in good condition from what i could see in a lot of the door jambs.

My problem was that i have a house to finish to a deadline so i didnt really have the time to spend on it which was a bummer as it seemed like quiet a good project that would be well worth the time and effort at the end.

I think the problem you've got is even if you decide to repaint the car you are going to have to remove majority of that matt black as it just has not stuck well and wont be a good base for a new paintwork to stick to.

                      • Grab a machine polisher and some cutting polish then go nuts. Just mask up any black plastics before you start so you don't burn them. Unless there is a chemical alternative.

                        • Well, I have started the long slow process of removing the black, but was distracted temporarily today with this little project:

Cut about 40mm off the shaft, so its a little bit shorter as well, feels great to shift and pretty happy overall!

excuse dirtyness of car, it will be rectified tomorrow! Poscas are not for graffiti either, i got them to draw on my boards.

                            • It's not essential to cut it down, but if you don't it's actually a fraction longer than the stock shifter, which is the opposite of what you want in a shifter.(longer throws). But if you don't want to irreversibly modify it I guess leave it as it is! I have to admit attacking it with a hack saw felt weird!!

It's not a must I didn't chop mine. People chop the shaft to make it sit lower as it sits 10mm higher than stock or so I've heard.. Mine didn't have the stock knob so I can't personally compare
