  • VR6 heatercore replacement

So yesterday I had to get a tow when my heater core decided to break.

On GAP there is an OEM and an aftermarket heater core available.
    GermanAutoParts.com

Is there a upgraded/strengthened heater core available from anywhere? Considering it is the worst job you can possibly do in a mk3, I would hope that it never breaks again.

Speaking of that, would it be better just to get it done at a shop if I have the cash? DIY just seems way too time consuming to be remotely enjoyable. Anyone know somewhere good to get it done in Melb? Any chance of change from a $1000?

    Cheers

Mate good luck... The only advice i have for you is 2 find somebody who has done a few mk3 heater core replacements ! I learnt the hard way dude.... Got mine done by a joe blow mechanic 18 months ago and just of recent it seems 2 be leaking again ???

Yeah I mean I'll definitely go to a VW shop, not just some random mechanic. I guess that means I'm bound to pay $1000+

It'd be nice to give it a go myself but just think it's so not worthwhile.

            haha fair enough.

May as well grab a new heater core, never know when you'll have nothing better to do then spend some quality time with the bently manual and the car in a million pieces

Would'nt it be lovely if the heater matrix was accessible from the engine bay ??? Like through the fire wall ??? Why oh why do they have 2 be designed like this ??? There has 2 be an easier way ??? lol

Yeah agreed, all the plastic crap around the engine bay has been breaking on mine lately.

Be careful ordering this part from overseas as there is a different part number for LHD/RHD cars

Ah good point, thanks for that. Maybe I'll just get the shop to source it when I get it installed.
