  • Thinking VR6

    Hey peoples.

Ive been thinking of purchasing a new used car. Previously I was looking at an Audi A4 but I guess I wasnt being realistic with how much I actually have to spend.

So I said to myself, 'what cool and fast vw or audi can I get for 10-11K or under?'

VR6 came to mind. And it hasnt left I like the sound of a 2.8 V6

Am I thinking on the right track? I drive a mk1 so im not familiar with mk3's.
Are they reliable? Seems like the power windows could be an issue.

Nice VR6 Passat on Ebay atm.
Thats virtually an Audi with a VR6. Best of both worlds.

You will find it thirsty after a Mk1 methinks.

Im not very keen on passats. Not really sure why, maybe the looks, but id rather a Golf VR6 over a Passat VR6.

I get roughly 10L/100km in the mk1. I understand that the VR6 would use more when thrashing but doesnt any car? As long as its not 25L/100km lol.

Could I expect to find a decent VR6 for 9-10K? Being looking on carsale etc... Some seem ok. Im not keen on em with 170,000+ ks tho

on that budget u should be able to find something nice i reckon. altho with the kms youre better off getting one that has had repairs done already than one that is going to need them soon so be careful with some of the low km cars that havent had anything done! they could still be a money pit! ultimately theyre quite a reliable thing mechanically just look out for plastic and rubber components starting to get old. so cooling system parts, suspension and bushes and stuff. all those sorts of things can get expensive.

Is there much of a difference between the 1994 models to the 1997-98 models?

I read in a Golf+ mag that the later cars had galvanised bodies.

94 models had smaller brakes and a different abs system. mid 95 onwards had the new brake system. 96+ model lost the textured bumbers and wheel arch trims and got oval indicators instead of square ones at the side.

There is not much of a difference as the last vr6 was in 97.

Don't forget that the engine changed I think 96 they used the ODB2 engine instead of the ODB1.

I burn about 9/100 litres when I drive normally (to and from work) and about 11 when I drive a little faster...but I went up to the hill one night after the new suspension and got an average of 22/100

I thought that they brought them out for the 96-97 models and that was it?

ok so are the smaller brakes a big deal or are they fine and i can put up with em?

Would a later model be better than an earlier one?
Ive compared 94 models to 97 and personaly the cosmetics dont really bother me. So thats fine with me in that department

Didn't the old ones had a recall on something?
