Rev meter reving up and down from 800 - 1300prm

heys guys, this afternoon i went outside to warm up my 1996 1.8 GL GOLF. i usually wait 10min as normals so it can be fully warmed up. as i drove down the road i stop at the traffic light and i put it to neutral then i notice my car reving up and down like CRAZI!! from 800rpm to 1300rpm.
i called my mate and he said could be a air leak??
can anyone help me out please! its getting so annoying lol
is there anywhere near liverpool area who can help me fix this problem?

Fuel injected cars DO NOT need to be warmed up before driving.

Alot of cars (including the magority of carbuerettor cars) are designed to be drivin lightly from start up, as this is the quickest way to warm the engine.
A (fuel injected) engine only needs to be idled for a maximum of 30 seconds (much less in Australia's warm climate).

Idling a cold engine will result in Glazing of the bore, aswell as possibly diluting the oil with petrol
You can also do other bad things by just idling for that long (including rusting the exhaust faster, dirtying plugs quicker, ect).
Grab a copy of Dr Karl Kruszelnicki's book "Science is Golden", theres a very good article about the damage excessive idling does.

As for the idle, check over your intake manifold and vacum lines, but also the Idle Stabiliser Valve (Idle control Valve) could be acting up.
I don't know to much about MK3's but checking over the things I said above is always a start.

Had a similar problem a while back on my 8v and it was fixed by cleaning the idle stabiliser valve. I just used normal carby cleaner and flushed out all the sludge caused by the car's standard blow-by setup. Also use it to clean your throttle body internally while you busy there.

hey thanks guys. i got it checked out today got the throttle body clean and it still doing the same thing. =s so left me no choice but to change the whole throttle body + sensor. dude told me it was 700 for a new one so i kinda said f#$#k that and got a used one for 200

Coincidently my car did this for the first time this arvo when I started it, I fiddled around with the ICV and then loosened and tightned the oil cap. Made it disappear but it came back for a few more seconds.

I dont see how it can be throttle body related when it sounds exactly like the symptoms of a cranky ICV.
Ohwell tell us how the new throttle body goes.

ok i put got the new one put in. its still acting up but 60% better then what it was before. just waiting for the computer check now.

ok guys got my car back today and its at its 100%. frank on st johns mechanical did a computer check and also resealed the throttle body and clean it out.
car runing like a beauty
