IDEAS - new exhaust for vr6

Alright i have a '97 vr6, and i am craving for that sound of an r32, i wondered if someone with a bit of a clue could steer me in the right direction for what brand and how far back i go with the exhaust etc etc

You could get a full magnaflow exhuast kit or another big brand, have a look around on youtube and find a sound you like. Depends a lot on what you want to spend really. Theres a heap of threads on this already too.

Guessing you just have the stock exhaust at the moment? I had the mid muffler in mine cut out the other day, sounds mean now. Best $100 i ever spent.

Get a 2 - 2.25" cat back sports system. Single resenator and a high flow muffler.

Will give the VR some brraappp and bit more go. Then I also suggest a CAI.

As James said, get a 2.25" catback exhaust, and a CAI will give you that complete sound. Don't worry about all these big brand exhausts cause in honestly where you are getting your power from is from getting rid of the suitcase that sits in the middle of the car, it also ways roughly 15kg!

I have seen direct comparisons between a 2 1/4" and a 2 1/2" mandrel bent cat back systems with straight through mufflers and the 2 1/2" inch showed more power and torque through out the rev range than the 2 1/4" netting 7hp peak hp more over standard. Not a massive gain but a good start.

If your feeling a little more wealthy you could go with a set of off the shelf extractors from one of many different tuners coupled to a high flow metal cat or de-cat pipe you should see some good gains aswell.

Though if your feeling like getting the most out of you engine the best setup i have seen was a set of 6 into 1 tuned length extractors using 1 1/2" stainless bends coulped to a vortex siphoning collector so the pipes collected in the firing order of the engine, the primarys were 150mm longer in length than the original vr6collector point. They merged at an angle of 12 degrees down to 2 1/4" diameter then straight out again at 12 degrees to 3 1/2" diameter for 10 inches in length and back down to 2 1/2" inch at 12 degrees for the rest of the system, with straight through mufflers in stainless. An expensive system but gained great power and torque through out the rev range and 23hp in total. One of the most interesting points though was the fact the VR6 sounded unreal and had lost its lumpy sound for a more raspy R32 sound especially above 4000rpm.

HOT - do want those kinda extractors!!

I've got 3-2-1 extractors and they're crap. I dont see the point.
I've also got a full magnaflow 2.25" system and while it makes much more torque (according to the arse dyno) its top end is worse than my old generic 2.5" system with a no-name "sports" muffler. I actually fairly keen on dropping the system and going back to 2.5".

Budget is your big concern though. My magnaflow was over a grand and for what? PIPES?

When I had a straight pipe (virtually) on my VR6 it did sound a lot like an R32 at the upper range, I can imagine at how much difference again a set of extractors would make. X2 on getting a custom job done, there are plenty of exhaust professionals in Australia that work on 1000+ hp machines and I'm pretty sure they get a few more ponies out of a VR6

cheapest most effective way!!!!!!
port your stock exhaust manifold and downpipe
cat delete
suitcase delete
and get somone to make you a 2 1/2 inch system
and yes get a CAI

Dont delete the cat man. I'm all for more power but cat's are there to help mother nature breathe a little easier. Get a hi-flow cat if you must.

X2, the difference in power is not worth the damage to the environment, nor the potential $10,000 on the spot fine! Also keep in mind that 100 cel cats will fail emissions so get a 200 cel at the least.
