  • Golf MK3 Repair Prices Correct?

Hey all, i have a 1998 Golf CL 1998 MK3, went to get the car checked out by a mechanic and find out there's are alot of things wrong, are these prices accurate?

Mechanic says it's a MK3 while another person said it's a MK4, how do you know which one you have?

Auto Pan Casket Leaking : $240

    Front Struts : $451

    Rear Shocks : $347

All Engine Mounts Need Replacement : $110 each + $231 Labour

Both Rack Ends Have Excessive Movement : $175 each + $115 Labour

Both Rear Wheel Bearings Have Movement : $95 each + $92 Labour

Front Lower Control Arms Torn : $371

and i think it says Serpinne Belt Cracked (air con belt?) $85 + $77 Labour

are these fair prices =/ ? should these parts last me a fair while if i replace them?

Welcome to the world of owning a VW.
Are these prices brand new? If you're on good terms with your mechanic, i'd see if some can be replaced by 2ndh parts then go parts hunting
I'm not technically minded at all so i really don't know what alot of the above means sorry.
Go and have a look at some pictures on here to see if you have a MK3 or a MK4... They look very different.
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

        Hey mate.

Got any pics of the car?

It could be a 97 model CL first registered in 98.

Take it to a VW place and see what they say.

Most normal mechanics get spanked of the price of VW parts.

If you are planning on modifying your car that money could get you some good springs and shocks.

Thanks for the replies, Stephy i've never been had experience with this mechanic before i'm sure he can fit 2nd hand parts but the labour charged for putting the part in might be alot of $

Water Boy i don't have any pics of the car but i think your right, i just popped the hood and found that the Golf was built in 1997 and said Volkswagen 1H i googled the 1H and according to Wikipedia it's a MK3 =)

Labour costs sound honest to me but parts seem expensive. Then again I usually source the parts myself and they end up being a lot cheaper than sourcing from the VW dealer which I assume is what that mechanic is doing, e.g. I just bought two rear wheel bearing kits for $40US + Shipping (less than $100AUD landed for the pair) and I bought a set of uprated engine mounts (total of three) for less than $200AUD shipped from DubAddiction (sponsor of the forums).

Contact Matt from CamdenGTI (PM "Golf Loon" on the forums) and you can ask for a second quote from him.
            Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
            Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Thanks rayray086 i will contact CamdenGTI tomorrow fingers crossed for better prices =)

If CamdenGTI do work out cheaper, i assume the mechanic can fit them but maybe labour costs are higher?

Seeing as your in Sydney, take the car to Matt at CamdenGTI and see what he can do for you. He may not think some of the parts will need replacing, and if they do, Im sure he can do better prices for you mate. He is a VW/Seat specialist and really knows his stuff

For the price of replacing the front and rear shocks, you could buy a new set of coilovers or springs and shocks if your going down the modified car path. Shoot me a PM if your interested in anything.

I've just had a lot of work done to my mk3.

Full service, rear brakes and bearings, engine oil leak/breather line fixed, drive belts (water, power steering pumps. ($1700.00 all up - so far)

                  Wheel bearing kits were $37.40

$275.00 labour to do two. But they also stripped the brakes and replaced the brake rotors and pads (those parts cost a lot more than the bearing kit)

mk3 ownership is ALOT cheaper if you can source parts and do the work yourself

Your getting taken for a ride with the price of parts. Labour seems fair though.

Get a aftermarket cup kit or some coilovers for the same price as the crappy boat suspension mk3's come stock with

Front structs and rear shocks - you can almost get done anywhere and have non guinine VW ones put in if your Ok with that... pedders? fulcrum?

Engine mounts - a bit pricey, but not an easy job.... might be able to get them cheap thru say supercheapauto. If you do an online part request thru a VW dealer (i use austral vw in brisbane) they usually respond with a qoute within a day...

I had rear bearings loose and offset recently and had them adjusted - cost me $55 per wheel.....in brisbane

all those items should last you a while, unless you drive your car into the ground.... not sure if you'll be able to get it re registered without doing all that, so it is probably worth it...... maybe one of the more experienced guys in this forum can help you out with that one...
