  • Another random kids pointless VR6 thread

Alright may as well introduce myself, Im Ben, 17, p-plater, and for the time being living in toowoomba.

Made a little trip down to sydney with the objective of finding/buying and driving back a car. Had a look at a few mk3s and picked up a 94 vr6, only about 90k's on the clock, interior and exterior seemed pretty good and really does go hard.

The thing's pretty much completely stock, "blue", and is sitting at 4wd hight.

Had been planning on buying a black one, but dom took a deposit a week before i left, a black colour cencept which i was also quite interested in managed to "lose his phone" so couldn't contact him and another one a forum member had an eoi out on decided they were no longer interested in selling... but we weren't leaving with nothing, saw this one and was quite impressed. Did have big plans for a black one, wheels lights everything all chosen, but its back to the drawing board now

We drove the car to the mcdonalds literally next door to the dealership to organise insurance, when we tried to start it again it was struggling to turnover, then when it finally did the thing stalled, alarm kept going off too as the battery was so low. Turned out the battery was well and truly ****ed, and it had no petrol. Good combination right But anyway the dealer gave us a brand new battery and half a tank of fuel so it was all pretty good really

Anyway i could go on about it for ever, but i think thats enough rambling.

Oh and since no new "build" thread is complete with out them, some horrible phone pics taken on the driveway from horrible angles:
(Things horribly dirty from the like 1100km trip back up, will wash it tomorow)

gotta get it registered in qld now, but that shouldnt be too hard. Then since i really have no money the ghetto mods shall commence >=]

Colour code the rest to match the black? >=]

But yea that would look sweet. Wheels will have to be next year when i move into a real job and make some real money, but might give them a coat of paint or something, atleast get rid of the scratches. Realllly do need a cheap way to get low for the time being though, i could probably set up a bed and fall asleep in the space between the wheels and the guards... but after buying this thing i can barely afford a tank of fuel let alone coilovers

Maybe ill go commodore style and go:
          Chevy badge
          Cut the springs
          Cut the exhaust
Steal the sickest pair of 22inch advanti rims i can find

but to make it really stupid, you need to put the chevy badge on and accompany it with a southern cross sticker on the back window!!

How does that make sense to comon-whore drivers? clearly the ironty is lost on them.

Did a somewhat dodgy paintshop job (well not even paintshop)
                    ->
                    Do want.

Looking into ways to get low for cheap, wondering whats the catch with these Horribly cheap ebay "coilovers"? I know you get what you pay for... but for only like 150 if these would work without damaging other things in the car, then maybe something like that could work for a while until i can afford some real suspension?

EDIT: another thing i was wondering about... The cruise control doesn't seem to work, not that it bothers me, I've never used it and around town i cant see much point, but if it was an easy fix it wouldnt hurt to do.

Common fault the cruise control. Along with plenty of other things that I don't wanna tell you in fear of ruining that "I just bought a VR6" vibe - it really is a great thing

If you want coilovers, go ask 'evorobin' about a set of Hottunings. Quite popular for a good drop without compromising too much handling and stiffness, for $850 as far as I can remember. The car looks clean, straight and best of all, stock. Best platform to begin work on is an unmolested example

Just be careful with future maintenance because although I haven't mentioned any of it, it can sting you quite hard. Lots of things on these that can (and probably will) go wrong! That noise and that performance makes it worth it though

haha yea had been "reasearching" vr6's for months before finally buying one so am quite aware that there are a heap of problems, but then again with any car this age theres gonna be problems, and that noise and feel when you touch the accelerator (even with my stock exhaust) make it worth the more expensive/hard to replace bits

                        Anyway some "progress" today:

Had agreed when sorting out paying for this thing to have a bit left over to buy a new headunit, as the old one may as well had been the stock one, was like 7 years old and so yea, needed to be refreshed.

                        old:

got a pretty good deal on this at jb

Didn't get many photos, but after soldering up what i figured i needed and connecting speakers, the thing wouldn't turn on. Turns out id blown a fuse when cutting the old wires, forgot to disconnect the battery anyway... while trying to figure out where the power problem was, found out there was actually a massive mess of wires and sticky old electrical tape, some things not even soldered and bare wires, looks like this must be the 4th headunit or so installed into this thing. So tidied it up a bit, got rid of some of the tape and soldered up dodgy connections. By now it had already taken 3x what i was expecting, getting the old head unit out and getting the new mount to sit nicely took quite a while.

So i finally thought it was all done, reconencted the battery, fired the thing up, had no sound at all. Then occured to me that that "speakers" i had plugged in were actually plugged in were actually rca leads, probably for an amp. A fair bit of searching later and found this completely useless amp hidden under the passenger seat:

The specs of the thing: 4x32W max. Actually a fair bit lower then the head unit it self... But since all the wires where there it was easier to just keep running it instead of tunning speaker cables up too the head unit. Might put a real 4 channel amp there when i have some funds again.

Anyway long story short some unknown cables we had found when trying to get the head unit powered turned out to be for the amp, reconnected these and almost came when I head music bouncing around the car

Anyway by the time it was all finally finished it was getting dark, and the crappy phone pics get even worse when its dark, but here.

The thing looks much better then what was previously there, not to mention front aux, usb and sd in, ipod control and like everything. Might just be that i spent way to long putting this thing in, but it seemed to sound 10x better too

That VR6 sound sure is awesome.
It was the one and only thing I liked about my car towards the end of me owning it.

Good luck with yours! Kudos for doing it on a tight budget too.

Well done mate and good luck with new VR6. BTW - if you have current RWC with your rego - your cruise cotrol must work. And how much you paid for VR6 if is not secret ???

I havent got a rwc yet as i bought it in NSW, will need to get one to get QLD rego though. You're saying the cruise control will need to work to get rwc even though most of these cars didnt come with cruise control?

Paid 7500 for the thing. Considering the low km's and the condition compared to alot of other ones i had looked at, thought it wasn't a bad deal.
