probly running rich. there are a few things that can cause it.
I was running rich when my cam position sensor failed. car felt really sluggish too. It went at about 175,000kms. which is a common fault.
as with my usual first response. get it scanned for codes!

The car doesn't feel sluggish. Its pulling as hard as ever. I think i will have to get it scanned.

Happens to me except only when i fill up. Is it at the back or front of the car the smell comes from???

I have a sneaking suspicion that i have a shot fuel sender + the seal. Will see if i can get to it on sat!

Have a look under the bonnet with the engine running see how strong the smeel is then.

The fuel pipes to the fuel rail have been known to dry out and split on earlier VWs. That could be the same for you.

They should come into the engine bay from under the brake servo on the drivers side.

actually thats a good point. if its not coming from the exhaust then thats a different issue!

The same thing is happening to my 94 VR6 too, when i go to work in the morning i can smell petrol....i cannot tell where its coming from either, but the smell is defiantely there. i dont know if the smell goes away after a while or if i just get used to the smell and i dont realise.

                Any help would be great.

On another note, which could be related, the car didnt want to start the other day, i played around with the fuse box and pushed in a couple of relays and it seemed to do the trick, but it might be something else entirely...the car does pull hard, but it seems to be a bit sluggish on take offs, especially @ low revs.

Tim, what is that cam position sensor you are talking about? where is it located, how much are they and is it a big job? what are the tell tale signs that it is gone?

I also noticed that my rev counter needle used to sit 2 clicks below the 1000 rpm/m, now sometimes it sits just under the 1000 and fluctuates once in a while?

any help or advice would be very much appreciated. I know shes due for a service soon too.

                thanks guys....

my car was running really rich and was slugging at WOT. easy to replace
sits at the front right hand side of the head in front of the coil. u need to remove the coil to get it out from memory. but thats just a few engine plastic trims and a couple bolts.
not sure on cost cos i had a spare one in a low mileage spare engine i have.

mine threw a couple codes. one saying the the sensor was intermittant. and one saying the mixture was out of range or something of the lambda sensor.

replaced it and back to normal pretty much straight away.

but yeah.. that was running rich so u could smell fuel from the exhaust. If fuel smell is coming from engine bays thats a bit different

i can smell petrol from inside the car, so i am assuming its coming from the front of the car?

                    any suggestions??

Just pop the hatch open and uncover the carpet there. The black cap is where u can access the fuel pump, does it smell there? Try that first. Im sure some selleys roof sealant over there wouldnt do any harm.
