  • Poly engine mounts for my VR6

Right, its time to upgrade from the swiss cheese OEM mounts. I am not really willing to pay the big bucks for VF mounts, and have stumbled across BFI poly mounts. They offer a replacement kit at US$125 (transmission plus inserts for the others) with a shore hardness of 60A, and another for US$195 with shore hardness of 85A.

My question is this: will a shorehardness of 60A be significantly better over OEM, and if I went with 85A, would She Who Rules complain that it vibrates to much? I have no experience with these numbers and so have no reference for what to expect. Which would you buy considering balance of comfort and improved responsiveness?

What is in the kit? F + R Upper and lower? I would go with the softer option. You will still feel the difference and it wont rattle your fillings at idle.

I have a TDi GB mount, turn2 front lower, new stock upper and wrd rear upper & lower. Good mix and not to shaky.

i have all three VF mounts. with just the front one it was fine. not much different to stock. its the gearbox mount that created the vibration. thats the one to be careful of.

I asked BFI about their kit, and they said they didn't ship overseas...bummer!

Tim is right. Be wary with the GB mount. Use the Tdi or G60 solid rubber version and not a poly/derlin etc one.

I'm trying to source some poly to make my own front and rear mount (GB is a little harder). will let you guys know RE front and rear mount when i get prices etc.

should be much cheaper than importing.

Thanks for the responses guys. Tim, since the VF front mount didnt increase vibration, what effect did it have? I replaced the GB mount recently with an OEM one so it still has good life in it. Should I just change the front? How about the rear?

it firms things up. less engine movement. but extra vibration wasnt noticeable with just the front. my front was pretty worn tho.
I did the other two at a later date.

                  Hi Guys,

Ive got excessive vibration in the cockpit, mainly on the roof of my VR6. It usually only happens when i take off or when the revs drop slightly. Does anyone have any ideas whats causing it. Im thinking an engine mount, possibly the front one but i dont know much when it comes to mounts, especially on the VR6. So if anyone can clue me up on this subject i would be very grateful.

Sounds similar to when my GB mount went. Look beneath and left of the coolant expansion tank, down to gearbox, and notice the silver bar connecting the gearbox to the subframe. Grab this bar and try to lift it. If it lifts up, your GB mount is stuffed.

                        Thanks Sukebe,

Could it be the front engine mount? How can i check?

Monkeysrus.... Where should i go to get the mounts from? should i ask for a TDi GB mount for a Mk3? Please advise.

Also, is this a DIY 1 man job? or is this best left to a mechanic?

                        Thnx
