You could always check facts before talking.

I can supply brand new window regulators for $150, which are genuinbe VW and will need your window motor transferred onto the new mechanism. The total job installed is $220 provided your motor is OK.

If your motor is buggered then second hand complete motor and reg for $150 fitted is the way to go.

The worst scenario is second hand reg and swopping over a different second hand motor this will result in many broken bits and short life of the motor.

Alternatively if your ego can cope with wind up windows, the mechanisms are $100 each from VW and never break.

The child has announced that the mk3 driver's window has stopped working. Pain.

How can you tell if it's the regulator or the motor?

If you can change from power windows to manual???
That's tempting (since we don't have to race Lancer drivers)

On the topic of the window regulator, is there a way to say modify the window regulator to advoid theses problems? All of mine are working at the moment, which i am enjoying, but the left rear one only goes up and down in about 5cm incriments when you push/hold the button. Any ideas what that is?
Yeah my driver side window is doing the same thing as yours ! I think i will just deal with it and wait till she goes kaput .

yea its my rear left one doing it so doesnt bother me at all, atleast its more functional then the back right one which i just had to tie with up cable ties to keep it in up position, dont have a spare 100 for a new regulator at the moment :S

It really is suprising there isnt an aftermarket alternative with metal clips or something that wont break.

Oddly enough I thought one in my car was dead, unplugged it from the loom and then plugged it back in and it worked again? Weird.

I'm thinking we'll convert to manual window

I've had to get $800 of work done on the mk3 today just to get it registered!!
Front strut top bushes, lower control arm bushes and rear tranmission mount., new tail lamp.
Then they quote $179 plus $150 labour to replace the window regulator OR $150 plus over $200 labour to convert the window to manual. I can't manage another $350 right now.

Does anyone know where I can then window done for a more reasonable price?

I had the same problem and everyone said it was the reg. I took the reg out and got a new OEM one ($100 from KMJ parts in brisbane) and went to put it in and found out it was actually the motor. Either way you'll have to take it out, and can test it to see what the problem. The motors are pricey new ($500), so i'd try a wrecker or maybe US website since the AU$ is so strong. The guys on these forums are your other best bet, they pretty much can help with anything.....
