  • New Vr6

    Hey lads,

so just pcked up my new car last night, a 1998 VR6.
after back and fourth with these cars, i finally had enough money to buy one.

its green, 150000km, fabric interior and virtually stock standard.
to be quiet honest, i am absolutely in love with the thing.
the way it sounds when you give it a bootful is unbelievable.
    (photos will be up tonight)

atm, there seems to be no issues with the abs, and the chains are quiet as, which makes me happy.
but, the air con seems not to get cool enough, and the rear right window needs a push down to get it working.any tips for these issues?

    apart from that, its perfect.
    thanks for reading.

    Congrats on the purchase mate.

Air-con may just need a re-gas but more often than not, the compressor needs to be rebuilt/replaced. Best to get an expert opinion on it. Lucky for you summer has just passed!

The power window regulators on the Mk3s are notorious for screwing up. The weakpoints (wheels that guide the cable) are made of plastic and are prone to breaking. The rear right power window regulator on my car has been replaced no less than 3 times over the course of my ownership, and judging from what you're experiencing, yours may be goin' out soon. Fortunately their not that expensive, nor hard to DIY.
    Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
    Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

cheers mate, really pleased with it

and about the aircon, i was playing with it just now, and if i put on it hot, it works wonders,
and on cold its cold, but just not cold enough,
it tries, but doesnt suceed hah
what prices am i looking at for the aircon regas/or rebuilt?

and yeh about the windows, i just dont think ill bother fixing them,
that is, if the aircon begins working.

okay, so here are some photos,
fairly dodgey, but im going away on retreat for school tomorrow, wont be around for three days,

the car overall's pretty straight, i mean theres the old scratches and stuff, but nothing a little money cant fix.
as i said im going away so it wont be be before saturday that ill get a chance to properly wash it and give it a polish. i also want to repaint the little spoiler on the back, and possibly the handles, any recommendations?

ohh and if anyone has the clear foglights lying around, i'd love to buy them
or just a clear piece to replace the orange one

Use kiwi shoe polish to get it back to black (spoiler and handles) search it.
                Get a euro VR6 lip.
There are plenty of affordable options off the net regarding fog lights,

                ENJOY!

so i gave the thing a detailed clean today,
cut and polish, all of that.
came up really nice, very pleased.

on a bad point, went to unlock my drivers door, and the barrel of the lock broke,
has this happened to anyone else?
                  what are my options?

ohh and anyone have any orange indicator replacements?
just want to have them clear rather than purchase the whole set.

That happened to my Polo - i just had someone install central locking with a remote.
The few days i was without the remote, i was locking/unlocking from the passenger side.

I picked up a smoked set of indicators/foglights off ebay - so keep an eye out there.
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

                      Hi cicca_294

Been there about 6 months ago with the door lock... I ended up getting a repair kit from the states which included the barrel. Fixing it depends on what parts have broken and if you have lost any. Do you have all the tumblers and springs? You have a few options though.

1 - Pretty sure you can take the one out of the passenger’s door and put it in the driver’s door (You can replace the passenger’s side with a non keyed handle).

2 - Get a repair kit from eBay (search - vw lock cylinder kit)

3 - Put a non keyed handle on and fit remote cental locking

                      Web page that may help
                      Untitled Document

There was one really good page which helped but I cant seem to find it... will keep looking

                      Cheers

                        thanks guys,
yeh its that last bit on the end of the barrel,
i went to turn it, and must have pushed too hard, and it just clicked and yeh

i think ill get a new set of locks,
do both of them while im at it,

i was worried about having to have different keys compared to the ignition from what i understand its all about swapping over the little slot thingos that go in the barrel ye?

                        ohh and photos soon,
just bought some smoked side indicators, looking at some smoked foglights

oh ye, i meant just like the barrels, not the locks :S
saw someone elses thread, bought new barrels from toheys or something like that?
that should mean i keep the same keys ye?

This may help if you haven’t already seen….

From memory I didn’t use the vas as per the linked page …. I just washed the parts in some mentholated spirits and put them into the new barrel with some graphite grease..
