  • DIY 97' VR6 speakers

    Hey all,
This is my first post since buying a Mk3 vr6 this week. Some of the DIY stuff is really impressive. Mine is completely stock apart from an ancient Kenwood Cd Tuner which I hope to replace soon. I was wondering if anyone knew the size of the speakers in the doors, they look to be 6' splits. Are there any DIY posts for replacing the speakers? Any help will be appreciated as I don't want to pull the doors apart and break anything!!

You're going to have to trim the inside of the speaker covers to make anything at all fit. a 6.5 inch will fit in the holes provided for you BUT the plastic guides from the OEM ones will need to be trimmed back. I took the door card off and separated the speaker/luggage cover and used a stanley knife until it fit properly.

I don't think that's 100% true...it depends on what mounting pieces you get in the kit with your speakers. I didn't have to do any cutting or anything to fit mine up, I just had to twist the mounting plastic around until I got a place to get all four screws in. My speakers are chunky so the black stock mesh didn't fit over the top but I've seen boston acoustics and mb quartz speakers fit behind there no problems.

      The speaker is 6", yeah.

The interior inserts change over the years, my car had MKIV style speaker covers for instance.

You're just going to have to take your old speakers out and see if they will fit, they most likely won't and the word on vortex generally supports what I was saying before, and you will have to get a 6.5 to fit, the OEM ones are a 6 in a 6.5/7 bracket.

I run Rockford splits in the front and just 6" in the back, went in with minimal effort and i just put the covers the speakers came with on them. Looks pretty swish but not out of place, i just took the old speakers out and took them to the guy that sells me car audio. To be honest, if the quality of the speaker is good, it's not going to make any difference if you run it off a head unit only with no amp, so just get whatever fits.
I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...
