Yes thats right another thread on the VR6 . Why ? Cause no one really went into much depth in any of the posts and none were open so I could reply to them ! I guess to get your 2c in these days you need to sit by the computer and post asap !
Anyway
Here is my take :
Since your only 16 or so and dont have much money there is a lot of reasons why you shouldnt get a VR6 . They are thirsty round town , most are higher kms and a lot have had services skipped and with a bad service history . Courtneys car for me was a prime example , the engine spun a bearing when it was loaned out . $9k later and almost a year I finished rebuilding it . Yeah its super reliable now and Im not afraid to race it interstate , but to get there I could have just bought a second hand Polo GTI instead and would be just as quick and reliable . The VR6 parts arent that expensive , but there are a lot of them that need replacing now : driveshafts , fuel pump , crank sender , coilpacks , engine mounts , drive belts , timing chains , clutch , gearboxs need rebuilding , thermostat housing, window regulators even simple things like ecu/fuel pump relays are failing on them . When you add it all up the few hundred becomes thousands fairly quickly .
The for really depends on individuals , for me its the heavy engine flung far forward of the axles , makes a good platform for a drag car . Some people like the noise . The large amount of torque available on tap in any gear is awesome as well , you dont need to rev it to buggery to move . The ease in which it responds to forced induction is awesome as well . But like all things it comes at a price .
Alternatives : Id be getting a Seat Ibiza gti , cheap , fun to drive and less prone to mechanical needs than the VR6 . If you need 4 doors get a mk3 2l . A simple cam , intake , chip and exhaust and you'll have heaps of fun without drinking too much fuel . If your seriously after a fast car and dont care about reliability get an air cooled beetle with a 1916cc or so . You'll be quicker than most VR6s in Aus .
In the end its your decision and good luck buddy
