1994 Volkswagen Golf vr6 from UK and Ireland - Comments

What things have gone wrong with the car?
Timing chain is noisy.
Engine uses oil.
Interior is very squeaky.
General comments?
The VR6 was one of my dream cars that I had to own. I thought it would be the fastest thing on the road, how wrong I was. Even after having a superchip fitted and putting in a pipercross filter many a modern performance car will leave it standing. I know a Saab 93 has a turbo, but to see one pulling away down a dual carraigeway was deflating.
Fuel consumption is reasonable considering the size of the engine, but the small fuel tank means regular fill ups.
The list price of a Golf VR6 was £19,000,how anyone could pay this is amazing. The interior is awful, very plasticky. The seats do not offer any thigh support, I have taken to putting a rolled up towel under my leg to take some pressure off my heel.
I should have replaced our Mercedes with another, but I wilted under the pressure of others.
The engine needs serious money spending on it as the timing chain is rattling and the tappets make a racket when starting from cold.Poss' £1500.
Might start looking for a diesel Merc or maybe a Passat. ah well we live and learn.

Hi, I'm from Sweden and feel that I have to say something about the VR6's performance. I've never had a Golf VR6 myself. However, I've got a friend who has one from 1995. The same friend is also used to driving SAABs with Turbo engines, since his father have (and is still owning two of them), two SAAB Aero's (the fastest SAABs), and a 900 with a approx. 170 BHP in it, this one is not an Aero (The Aeros are 220 BHP+), but it's still a Turbo. Now, I know my friends VR6 is more new than your car, but it's only one year, so I guess the performance and engine should be closley related. - Thing is, my friend likes his VR6 sooo much more than he likes his fathers Turbo SAABs!, Sure, the performance of the SAABs are great, in fact, I don't think any brand can touch the performance of the Aeros for that kinda money, but still, he would never dream of getting a Turbo SAAB for the same money as a VR6. The VR6 engine has all the raw power of a V6, something the SAABs don't, and let me tell you, (from having riding along with my friend many times, both in his VR6, and in the SAABs), in a SAAB you gotta change gears as good as ALL the times to enjoy it's true performance, in a VR6, things are a lot smoother. If you really think your engine is so much poorer than a SAAB Turbo, my advice is that you take it to a proper garage, beacause something must be serously wrong with it, it ain't THAT much slower than an Aero, I tell you that... Also, my friend think his Golf handles better, and feels "smaller" (with a good reason), than the SAABs. And I have to agree with him. SAABs are excellent while on the highway, but Golf VR6's seem to be both good on the highway, and much better round towns.. Not to mention I have more fun riding in his VR6 than in his fathers Aero, just some thoughts from me...

Two of my friends own VR6's. one has covered close to 180k miles and has never needed anything other than general servicing, seems to me yours may have had a hard life, they need regular oil changes like any performance cars! I think they're a great car and the engine noise on full chat is awesome!

Hi, just reading other comments about the golf vr6,i own a 1997 vr6 with 113,00 miles on the clock and other than regular servicing and timing chains it has not put a foot wrong.
About the performance, i regulary chase down impreza, s civic type r and far more modern so called hot hatches. my friend runs a bmw 535i and my golf walks all over it. the vr6 golf is a very fast car even faster if you go for the higher octane fuel. trust me buy one you will not be dissapointed.
Cheers matt.

Golf VR6's are quik no doubt, my freind owns one and he's taken me out for a demo one or twice, but it does'nt feel as quik as my scoob, even though I was the passenger, I haven't raced him as he's just a workmate, but he says its not as fast a scoob, the person that say they chase down scoobs, I think CHASE is the key word here, do you ever see them in your rear view mirror during a race?

Hello VR6 fans.
VR6 is really a fast car, no comment on that. I own one since 15 months, it's a 1995 edition model, and I never had any problems with it;if you like to live a long life and not to be afraid that you will die from heart attack, just buy a vr6 and listen to its sound, it will make your heart very very big.

Hello! My name is Caesar from Australia. The day I got my MK3 VR6 1995 Model with 59000 km on the clock I just fall in love with it. My girlfriend is so jealous coz I'm spending more time with my Golf than her. And I tell you guys, shame on you that you comparing such a classic with modern cars, coz golf it's an art. Its nimble its fast its cool and still, for more than 10 year old car is a head-turner. Every car needs repairs, service and unexpected cost, but if you gonna treat your VR6 with RESPECT I doubt it will let you down. So Respect Guys for The best ever build sport car in a history of motor-sport.

Their fairly nippy, but in my opinion not fast, I've been behind one at traffic lights in an Audi A3 1.8T and the VR6 wasn't pulling away at all, there was nothing in it.

Mine has 167,000 miles an uses tons of oil - but the power and sound of the engine puts a smile on my face every time I hit the loud pedal.

I got VR6 2 months ago and I agree with most of the comments! The sound is awesome and the power is unreal! It's a 95 and still pushing 145mph! How many 12 year old cars will still do this? The 2005 Type-R flat out is 146mph!
I agree it isn't the fastest on car on the road, but I paid £2400 and my little baby killing BMW 330's, Audi's, and Mercs all worth £20000 or more!
Scooby's are one of the quickest rally cars on the road with 4wd and japanese, so I wouldn't feel that bad if one was pulling away! If it is that bad, fit a supercharger and meet him on the drag strip!

The Vr6 was my dream car; the tone of it is enough to make your mind wonder! I fitted freeflow, branches, gas-flowed the head, and widened the ports. I leave a 325is about 5 car lengths (behind) on take off. Vr6 is a real perfomer all the time and never lets me down.

I just bought a mint condition 1993 VR6 2 months ago. The thing is awesome; It came fitted with a top end Alpine system, but I never use it because the howl of the engine at 4k rpm is better to listen to than anything on Radio 1.
For good measure I had the throttle body ported and polished; fitted the uprated inlet manifold from a corrado VR6, and had the engine tuned and chipped. Impreza's were faster before the mods, Now I can keep up with most of them. Top end impreza's still have a very slight edge, but hey, what would you rather as a background soundtrack, the soulless whinning hiss of a turbocharger or a howl of a German high revving V6 engine? Choice is obvious.

Just a short comment, my VR6 94 has done 225,000. I've had it for a few months now and it's great to drive, slight noisy timing chain, but still goes great and doesn't use much oil. So far I'm very happy with it... Mick Australia.
