  • MkIII GL/CL Auto - Am I mental?

So the lease on my Polo is up this year and I want to get something relatively cheap (cut those costs!) to replace it but want to keep it in the dub family so was thinking maybe a MkIII CL/GL etc doesnt really matter but it does have to be auto as my wife will be driving it as well. Budget would probably be around 5-6k I reckon.

First question, what are the auto boxes like?
Second question, WHEN they break, whats the rough cost to replace/rebuild one?
Third question, am I an idiot?

    Cheers Mk3'ers

I reckon its woth spendiing a couple more grand to get a Mk4 auto as the Mk3 ones are all pretty old and inclined to break nowadays.

    Mk4 autos are more reliable.

A secondhand Mk3 auto box will cost you a couple of grand fitted and will have minimal warranty.

To rebuild a Mk3 auto fully is about $6k!!!!!

You are probably right about the extra few k for a Mk4...whats 2k when a new gear box is 6!!!!

Or teach the Mrs to drive a manual and never have a slushbox again.

Are the auto boxes in Mk4s generally better than the ones in Mk3s or is it just the age thing thats the factor?
