  • Gear change problem

    Hi Guys,
I am new on this forum, have read quite a bit the last few months and bought a VR6 in November last year. So far so good, am planning upgrades to suspension (Eibach), wheels (Audi TT 17s) and seats (Recaro's) but currently the car is still stock.

Now the problem I encountered this morning was I could not engage reverse gear, and after some fiddling and trying it turns out I can select 3th and 4th gear, but can't change to 1, 2 or reverse. I am not a mechanic, but I think the leaver mechanism is the problem, not the gearbox itself. I can move the gear know left to right, but nothing happens, selecting up and down only changes between 3rd and 4th.

Is this an easy fix, or is it a big repair? Any ideas how this can be resolved are much appreciated!

    Cheers
    Casey

I had that happen in exactly the same way years ago with my first VR6. It is a part that is made out of plastic and the nib breaks off. My mechanic mate fixed mine by putting a bolt through from the back in the place where the nib broke off.

However I believe that the part that you need is 1JO 711 256 and it is called a driver. As I recall it is a bit of a bugger to get at but not too hard for a DIY.

      Thanks Tony,

Appreciate that. I am taking it to a mechanic tomorrow, it sounds like a relatively easy fix. Will let everyone know how it goes.

Took the car to Volksaffair in South Melbourne, took 30s to diagnose the problem, part is ordered and will be put in Monday.

          Cheers for your help everyone!
