  • Vr6 issues

    Hey,
my vr6 is having a few issues with the engine. its got a strange metalic sound coming from the drivers side of the motor. hard to explain the sound so ive uploaded a link to a video on youtube. my mate reckons it could be a broken piston ring because it is blowing a bit of smoke but only after decelerating, my mechanic says its the valve stem seals. and the mechanic cant hear the other noise that im talking about!

because this is my first vr6 i dont know if the sound is normal for the engine so i was hoping i could catch up with some others that have vr6's to compare the engine sound.

    any help/advice would be awesome!!!

    cheers sam

The sound could be timing chain related.
When was the last time you checked the chain/chain guides/tensioners?
Usually sounds like ball bearings rolling around in a milo tin.

Smoke really depends on colour and driving conditions.
Bluish grey for oil, black and sooty for rich fuel trim, white for coolant.
Smoke on the decel/overrun or downhill could indicate stem seals, sure...

Mate the youtube link does it no justice, you wont get a clear diagnostic result from that, i had a good listen a few times. Take it to someone who knows what they are listening to and someone who has been around these engines, thats my advice. Could be timing chain but the guy reckons drivers side , chain is on pass side

The window Regs are par for the course im afraid, i reckon if you keep it convert to manual , mate i dont recall ever changing one of them!!!!! I have bought a Cordy for a work vehicle and im seriously thing of going manual. Anyway sounds like you are having engine dramas. Cyl leak down test will find the result for sure mate, if it turns out its a ring mate the cyl head will be off so then it will be chains anyway

Just a thought ,you are not down a cyl so there is a seal still, if it is a top ring the cyl leak test wont show, the cyl will still seal, will take the right ear to find that mate
