The gearbox in my 16V Mk2 Golf did something similar to that and I was just cruising down the highway in 5th gear at 105kph. It looked pretty spectacular in the rear view mirror. Smoke, bits of metal and cars rapidlly changing lanes to miss it all.

I put a bolt kit through my diff when i built it so hopefully that doesnt happen.
