  • Indicator mystery

    Hey all,

lately I've been having a problem with the indicators in my mk3.
On occasions (particularly when the car is cold???) the indicators will not work at all, or only for a few flashes. The stalk is still in the on position but it does not want to work, if I flick it off and back on it will sometimes work again but go out again.
Once the car is up to temp, the indicators seem to work fine and I have had no problems.

I tried to read through past threads for any info, but all i could find were based on non-standard setups, etc. My car is a completely stock GL model, so unsure, the only thing i could think of was a possibly failing ignition switch?

    Any suggestions would be great.

    Cheers,

    Michael

    Relay or Stalk.
Relay is the cheapest and easiest to swop and see if it fixes it.

Seldom working could have maybe been a bad earthing, because my rear taillights did the same thing. But, if they work once the car is warmed up that's just weird.

Try putting a little bit of upwards or downwards pressure on the stalk when you turn them on.

I have to hold the stalk down to use my left indicator. One day, I'll pull the stalk assembly out, and clean and re-adjust the contacts inside.

Yeah i did actually give this a go (had a similar problem on my mk1), but it still turns off.

yeah mickey it is just weird, i'm wondering if there is not enough power getting to them initially, like perhaps there isn't enough voltage/current being supplied but as the car runs for a while it builds up the required charge??

Shall replace the relay 2moro also just to be sure

They should stay on for as long as you hold pressure on the stalk. If so, the stalk is the problem.
