  • Mrk3 Idle Trouble!!

    Hi

I have 97 Mrk3 Golf that seems to be rough at idle (sounds like it is missing)but this go's when you accelerate.
Could it be a air leak somewhere or something more??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, or crap in the throttle body, mate.

Check the vac line at the fuel pressure reg, back of the inlet manifold mate, also the crankcase breather hoses on the tappet cover to crankcase are common to splitting, makes it run rough as. Definately sounds like secondary air

Found the air leak, was the small rubber hose that go's to inlet manifold just under the hose from crankcase outlet.
Thankyou for all the help, greatly appreciated.
              Cheers

I have a similar rough idle issue with my recently purchased 1996 2.0L GL. The seller left me a rubber hose part in the boot that he said would solve the issue. From an internet image search, it seems to be a rocker cover breather hose.

Is this the same hose that being discussed here? Is it a DIY job? (for a reasonably coordinated person)

My air leak was from the brake booster pipe...

Oh righto. Thanks for the clarification. That makes at least 2 possibilities for my rough idle then...

By way of an update, it turns out that my rough idle was due to both possibilities; the rocker cover breather hose had perished (easy to replace) as well as a noisy water pump (currently being replaced by my mechanic... along with my timing belt... $$)
