Crack Pipe?

I know it's been covered a number of times but I need to change over the crack pipe in my VR6 and can't find any information relevant to my car.

I've found the attached thread on VwVortex: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2385488 but it looks like the write up suits an american engine with the smog pipe/pump etc.

I can see and touch the crack pipe from the front of my engine, there is nothing in front of it but I can't work out how to get it out.

Any help guys?

I unfortunately had to drop an engine mount and raise the motor to get to it mate. Wasn't that bad of a job, it just isn't instantly accessible that's all.

I've got no problem getting to it at all, I've loosened off the front bar, I just need to get one end of the pipe out so I can get the new one in.

its a pain in the....yeah...its a pain to get to. i changed mine when i did the timing chains so i was already in there but to change it with everything in its place would be difficult
this is where it sits in relation to some other bits on the engine if ur not sure


but with the engine in the car, the radiator and everything will be in the way, so i dun think ill be much help sorry!

i'd probably try taking the front bad off so u can move the radiator forward to make more space.even thats a bit of work
though, depends how much big work u wanna do to make less fiddly work.
make sure youve got all the bolts out of the coolant housing on the end, there are a few awkward long ones on it

excellent pic Shteifen, that's exactly what I am looking at.

Is there a way to remove the black thing on the right that the pipe runs into? If I can get that off the end of the pipe I am home free.

yeah, you need to take the black coolant housing to the right off before you can take the pipe out, thats whats holding it in. there are a number of screw/bolts holding it in. 4 or 5 if i remember correctly...they are in all sorts of awkward positions so u gotta make sure you have them all out otherwise youll just be reefing on it and get confused cos it wont come out (been there done that haha!)
i think there might be two or three holding it to the block, maybe 4, but i seem to remember thre being another one holding it maybe to a bracket or somethin...
the thermostat is on there too i think so be sure not to separate that from the cooland housing, there is no need, it can stay attached

Well after giving it a go this afternoon, I am sad to say the black coolant housing thing to the right is no longer with us. I got a little angry at the car and had to get destructive to get the crack pipe out as one of the bolts decided to seize up, I then had to get destructive to get the new crack pipe in.

Yeah it definetly does Steve, very crusty and oily.
