  • Bit of advice on an old/new vr6

    Hey everyone,

    I recently bought a '94 golf vr6 in Melbourne, and while it is going great there are a few things I'm looking to fix up. Righto before I start I realise this thread could probably use some pics, but I'm on holidays in the Gold Coast at the moment, and I wanted to start research asap. Ok here goes;

    1. Probably the main one. Sometimes when I try and start her up, it takes maybe 5 or 6 turns. It's never failed to start, sometimes it stuggles. I was thinking probably starter motor or battery, I checked the light on the battery and it was green so I assume it's not that.

    2. Lock on passenger side door comes out when I try and unlock it with the key. It's not really an issue seeing as its got centeral locking, and the lock doesn't come out easily. I'm planning on getting remote locking done, I'd assume while installing that whoever does it could rectify that pretty easily?

    3. Dashboard light behind speedo doesn't work. The one on the tacho works, probably a bulb, saw a thread on that here just then so I'll give that a geez when I can. Hopefully a cheap fix.

    4. Gear stick, steering wheel and indicator/wiper knobs are pretty worn, for example the vinyl is peeling off. Steering wheel I'll just get a cover for, any advice on the other two?

    Other than that it's all good, plan on changing the cd player/speakers adding an amp, but thats easy done.

    Anyway thanks guys for any input.

    1. Perhaps search here or vwvortex. Or the resident mechanics will chime in when they get here...

    2. Yes they would be able to do that. If it requires a new lock, go secong hand (try your luck with colours) wiht Golf Loon, maybe try GAP (www.germanautoparts.com) the stealer or find some aftermarket ones (audi door handles )

    3. Check the bulbs, most likely cause for sure.

    4. GAP, the stealer, Golf Loon.

    Hope that helps.

      Fix the lock thing asap because if someone can pull the lock out, all u need then is a screwdriver to turn the switch and ur car will be unlocked.

      The thing that needs to be replaced is the "eccentric" and its best to get the whole kit as vw only sell the uprated ones. Shouldnt cost too much from the dealer.

        For No 1... This was happening to me until my water pump died. I also had some dodgy sensors with bad electrical connections which got fixed at the same time. Since then, it has started true each time.
